Anybody going, the section of DOT regulation manual that will help you if your rig is titled personally is 390 (f) (3). That is an exemption from DOT for personally owned vehicles towing race cars (as well as boats, horse trailers etc) Also all states have no weight for motor homes. The fact that you might (good luck) winning money is covered in 390(f)(3) and it is allowed. If your rig is titled in a company name (ABC Inc or John Doe Racing), you could have trouble. Dot weight regulations start at 10000 lbs so a pickup with a trailer is under that. If your license weight covers your truck and trailer weight, you are probably ok. This is really a crappy deal. If the officer asks if you are racing for money, your answer is any hobby money I win is claimd on a 1099 from the racing organization or facility and you do not claim any expenses for racing on your federal tax return. You are not required to have your federal tax return in your possession. Keep in mind, most enforcement officers do not have a clue what they are enforcing. They have these questions to trip you up. If you are driving someone eles's rig, and you are asked if you get paid for that, your answer is no. Last time I helped someone in N. Caroline, I wrote the Governor about this crap, and you know, it went away. Who is the Governor of Minnesota anyway. I am a good letter writer.

I liked when NHRA guy said he thought it was going to be more like educational thing on what racers need to be compliant, I'm sure it will be VERY educational,you learn things real fast when you're the one that has to pay.
DOT usausally educates with fines,you fix that problem,then next DOT says that not legal heres your ticket,call in see if you can find what is legal,shuffled on phone,explain story X# times and most likely never get answer of what is legal,and that is just for one state.
If it was only to help that would be fine,but I doubt it is going to be the friendly little get together of do this or that and have nice day,I'm thinking do this or that and heres your ticket,have a nice day will be how it goes.

If you think about it, the NHRA is like the circus coming in to town with an abundant amount of money, The DOT looks at it like it's a cash cow. Easy money! Most of the racers would just pay the fines and go on their way, no court or appearences needed.
Instead, the DOT should be meeting the racers and giving them escorted parade going into the track, then all would be winners. Everyone would look favorably at the DOT and show that the racers are on a pedistal to the public.

Minnesota has been going after trucks for years trying to bring in more revenue. They lost a court battle last year and are now trying another tactic.

Well here are my $.02 - I am in the RV Industry and a Racer as well and after many conversation's with Ma. DOT people the one thing they hang there hat on is if you are using a personally owned/registered unit to create revenue you are considered commercial - if that is the case when you are at the gate for a Divisional or National event it is hard to say you just run for a trophy - NHRA you should be there for the Sportsman Racer to defend us the big guy's have CDL driver's that are on the payroll and can drive by there log book etc. - I can't speak for everyone but I often work a full day then take the coach and trailer to an event (not log book compliant) - but I would think twice about getting in line with the DOT using me as a class room example - just my $.02 -Bob

If this was truely an "educational" thing, then why doesn't the NHRA (who welcomes this) have at each of there national or divisional events a class inviting the DOT to talk and really educate the racers on rules, laws compliance etc. along with a question and answer session. then the DOT could provide guidance to the racers by inspecting there rigs at the request of the racers at there pit space (with no tickets being issued) to educate the racers on what may or may not be a concern. this would then truely be an educational thing that may provide for safety of the motorists and racers when traveling.
just my rantings a bout this whole mess.

That makes too much sense. Part of the problem ia that some of the people enforcing it don't know how to interpret the regulations either.
