Default Race 2 Report

Race Report
ACSSA Event 2, Miramichi Dragway July 20, 2019
Wow what a scorcher! Just when we thought Friday was hot, Saturday was hotter! But not as hot as the racing on MDP’s always well prepped surface. Event 2 saw 37 entries make qualifying attempts, with Guy Desjardins 1967 Camaro SS/EA entry sitting on top with a 9.17 (-1.17) run. Observed Conditions were as follows, DA 2440, HUM 74%, Barometer 29.52, and Temperature of 76 degrees. 36 contestants made the call for first round, and it was what seemed almost a day of opposites with many of the late round contestants of Race 1 falling early including day 1 winner Dan Nickerson and top qualifier Guy Desjardins. Fast forward to the semi finals we had a pair of our long-haulers, Eric Merryfield and Brian Oakes do battle, with Oakes advancing to final, while Fred Thibeault got the bye. So with the final set, Oakes versus Thibeault it was another nail biter. Friends (and competitors) for over 40 years the two would square off, with Oakes needing that 1 more round win to clinch the PC Richard Appliance & John Scotti Classic Cars National Open Series title. Thibeault’s B/SA Camaro was to leave first dialed 10.28 to Oakes SS/Ba Camaro’s 8.91, and did he ever, rolling through the beams he gave the win to Oakes who powered through with an 8.93 at 148mph. Clinching the win for the day and the Championship Title for the inaugural Canadian National Open Series, which was runner-upped by fellow ACSSA member Bill Sheppard.
