Need some Powerglide tech info
I'm building a manual shift PG. The core is a Torque Drive core which is a factory manual shift PG with no provision for a modulator. My question is with the valve body which is factory manual shift as there is no other valves beside the manual select valve and the pressure regulator in the VB. I want to know if there is anything that could or should be done to the spacer plate to improve it? Any holes need to be enlarged?
I installed a replacement pressure regulator spring in the valve body already. It has 4 reverse frictions and 6 high frictions and a dual ring servo. |

What was the diameter of the boost valve in the valve body?
Did you block the over run bypass in the pump? Did you drill the stator support for high flow? Did you block the cooler bypass in the pump? Drill out the "high apply" passage?

Boost valve .460 I knocked the pin out of the primer valve and tapped the pump but left the spring so it does still function, drilled the pipe plug center with a 3/16. I drilled the stator support at the direct bushing lube holes. Opened the thrust washer lube hole to .110, drilled the converter fill hole to 1/4".I didn't do anything to the cooler bypass. Where do you mean drilling the high apply passage?

If you don't plan on running a cooler, remove the cooler bypass valve. If you do run a cooler you need to have it in place to get cooler flow, if you make it non functional, make sure to keep the flow restriction down (big cooler, big lines) so the converter pressure doesn't get to high. The .460 boost valve is the smallest of three, bigger boost valve, more pressure. Depending on what spring you used, the .460 valve might be more than enough.

This is the pressure regulator spring I used. I do have a few core valve bodies I can possibly find a larger boost valve and sleeve if you think it needs it. Will always run a cooler with this transmission. |

You are doing good.
Cooler fittings can be restrictive to flow and cooler can, too. That can mess with stall by restricting converter dump. I usually use less spring, but a larger Boost valve. You have the smaller boost valve. Agree with what Jim said.. ^^^^^^ Depending on application pressure at 200+ is Ok I've run as low as 170 on my V-6 3185 lb car.

Cooler fittings are 6AN with teflon braided line to a stack plate cooler.
I pulled a core valve body apart and it has a .489 boost valve. I haven't seen any springs listed by pressure looked at TSR,BTE, and TCI. Car is 3,000 lb bracket footbrake car with a 355 SBC runs 6.60's to 6.70's in the 1/8th. What do you think Keep TCI spring and the larger boost valve or smaller boost valve? Stock spring with larger boost valve? |

Better check the ID of those # 6 fittings. I've seen some pretty small holes in them...That could be a restriction to converter dump.

I put the big boost valve in and left the TCI spring. When I put it in I'll put a pressure gauge on it and see what it has for pressure.
Thanks for the info. This is an old core that's an oddball since it's a Torque Drive, I've had it sitting for years finally got around to building it. |
