IMHO
What I like about index racing is the close competition with a great bunch of people
and it's affordable.

What I don't like is

8.899 time slips,

people who brake way too hard at the finish line,

timer controlled throttlle stops,

the payout at NHRA events,

Grading points requirements for National event entry,

being treated (in my perception) as less than a paying customer.

Regarding open competition (and comp eliminator) I like:

The idea of no break outs, the incentive to innovate and make your car faster

The simplicity of who ever gets ther first wins.

What I don't like about open competition is that :

Basically the cost and the fact that it takes a considerabkle investment and continuing reinvestment to be competitive.

Also In comp eliminator you also have to be concerned with odd ball combinations with soft indexes,

In comp eliminator ,having your expensive and time consuming performance advantage negated by the CIC rule.and having to drive the finish line to protect your index.

In order to race a heads up class your looking at an investment of :

$50k-$100k for Comp,or a 10.5 tire class,

[$300-400K for the alcohol & pro-mod classes

And to be competitive in the pro classes (except pro-stock bike) you need to have a budget close to or more than a million bucks.
I
I know a lot of people race these classes for a lot less than the figures I listed but I belive these estimates are accurate or low for those who race competitively in the NHRA.

Which generally puts heads up racing out of reach of most of us.

What I cant stand about index racing is the fact that people think it is heads up. If you can break out it is not heads up. Just because you take off at the same time it is not heads up. It is bracket race with a fixed time, ie index.

Ok, that's a good start. But, just to be clear, by Open Comp I mean as in the NMRA and/or NMCA "Open Comp" where you have a .500 pro tree and get qualified on your quickest ET, and then get dialed in one tenth quicker than your quickest qualifing run for the duration of eliminations...

Sorry 67 Champ
Never heard of "Open Comp" and since my pile of bolts doesn't have doors I have never been to a NMRA and or NMCA race
Seems to me the strategy would be to hang enough weight or retard the timing enough to slow the car down .08 during quailifying and then adjust it back for eliminations.
Sounds kind of hokey to me by it might make for a good tv show.
