He did run a '72 GTO in SS. I've read that in '72 he was provided with a '72 Bird for Stock, & a '72 GTO for SS.

Went back to his '68 Bird & won Stock at the '73 US Nats.

Here's a 2nd gen Bird that ran SS/AM. John Clegg drove it. It has "PONTIAC" on the scoop.

This model car was not available with a Chevy V8 engine. I'm not familiar with the SS/AM rules. So, is it required that the car run a Pontiac engine, with either Pontiac factory iron heads or alum heads that are NHRA approved for a Pontiac engine ?

It shows up on DRC from 1998 thru 2006. Ran mid 8's.

So, anybody here familiar with this particular car, that could give me engine details ?

Thanks !

I have some pics of the 1970 Knafel GTO, nat record holder. It appears to be running in the 2-FA or FA-2 class. So, exactly what is that ? Is it a Stock class ? SS ?

We attended the World Nats race in Amarillo, in '76, IIRC. We saw a car there named "Packin Poncho". It was a '69 GTO, with a hood scoop. Looks like it ran in the SS3 class. Can someone here clarify the AHRA/IHRA rules, for Stock/SS ?
Is there any info on the black 69?
Does it still exist?
My favorite car of all time 1969 GTO. Need to get one again someday.

We saw it at Amarillo back in '75 or '76. It had "Royce Fowler's" on the rear fenders.

I've found other pics that show what appears to be the same car, with someone else's name on the fenders.

A Google search turned up this article which claims the car is a 1-owner car. So, I don't know what the real truth is.

I saw the car at KCIR in 1971 and it had Royce Fowler lettered on the quarter panels. I do not remember the specific class it was entered in, but it ran well.

I think it has a Pro Stock BBC with Carburetors . Might have the Pontiac version of BBC heads . That car is pretty cool , he used to run it as a SS/I with a 455SD .

At the recent Jegs SPORTSnationals Bill Rink was #2. Don Kennedy was #4. And Irvin Johns was #7. Chris Stephenson was listed as driving a '68 Bird, in SS. But, he was driving a Buick Apollo.

Looks like Don beat Irvin with a holeshot, for the GT/EA class win. Bill was R/U in the Combo-Auto class.

At the Topeka doubleheader, Bill Rink's '74 GTO was the #2 qualifier for both races. Scott Burton's Pontiac powered '91 Bird was #27 for the 1st race & #20 for the 2nd race. At the time I'm posting this, Scott has survived 2 rounds of elims, in the 2nd race.

Today @ Indy, the #1 car on the SS Q-list was Pontiac powered, & driven by Don Kennedy. I'm also told that the #5 Cobalt has Pontiac power.
