Default Mark Herbold holds off 30 car field to win TNT Super Series opener!

.
Elma NY racer drills the tree in the final!

"This series is awesome!" said Mark Herbold from Elma, New York after winning the 2010 Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series opening event at Dunn Tire Raceway Park on Friday night. Mark fought his way through a field of thirty Hot Rod cars for his first win in the popular sportsman series.

"Thirty cars is a Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series all time high," commented Joe Boniferro, series title sponsor. "This just shows how popular these types of local racing series have become." Presented by Kevin Orr Mechanical, this event paid a solid $617 to win and $308 to the runner-up.

With cool temperatures and sunny skies, the weather was perfect for drag racing - adjusted altitude hovered around 1000' all night. And after two rounds of qualifying, Dave Surmatchewski of Oakland, Ontario had his Insta-Insulation Olds Cutlass atop the field with a near perfect 7.001 to take home the Hoosier Tire Canada number one qualifier award.

In round one of competition, Mark was late on the tree but his finish line skills got him through. He was able to push another Elma, NY racer, Jason Vitez, under and win in a double break-out. Then Mark got the tree back and won round two on the starting line against last year's fifth place racer, Tom Coonly of Blasdell, NY.

Round three saw Mark take out Macedon, NY's Gary Stowell by a mere .009 second margin of victory. And even though Gary had a slight starting line advantage, .516 to a .522, Mark ran closer to the index with a 7.007 to Gary's 7.022 effort. Semi final action put Mark up against number two qualifier Fred Gross of Brampton, Ontario. Fred had a slight advantage off the line but Mark pushed him under, running a 7.031 to Fred's too quick 6.996.

That set Mark up to face Jeff Sobczynski of Depew, NY. Jeff coincidentally was in the final at the last TNT event back in October 2009. When the tree came down, it was all Mark with a huge starting line advantage, cutting a .507 to Jeff's .579 light, and taking the win running a 7.048 to Jeff's 7.042.

"First of all I would like to thank my wife Janice and my two girls Stephanie and Sarah," said Mark. "Gary Schintzius and his family, Crockett, Todd from KTR Race Engines, Brian from BDR torque converters, my Mom and Dad and all the tracks and personnel that are sponsoring TNT series. Specifically Joe Boniferro for making this series possible and Kevin & Laurie Orr for presenting tonight."

Mark has owned the 1994 Corvette for three years. It's powered by a 322 Buick prepared by KTR Race Engines and is capable of elapsed times near 5.40 in the eighth mile.

This win propels Mark into the Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series points lead with 107 points. Jeff Sobczynski is in second place with 89 and Fred Gross is third with 85. Rounding out the top five are Wayne Sipos of Binbrook, Ontario and Alden, New York's Brian Young - both with 70 points.

The Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series heads to Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park for a double event this weekend May 22-23. Second City presents the weekend with $1000 guaranteed for Saturday's event. The weekend will include rounds in the PMRA Pro Modified Series, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and the Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series.
