Default Seat Belts

Does the NHRA really need to have seat belts put in a stocker every two years? Could it be changed to a period more in line with how fast they wear out?

My understanding is that the rule is based on the lowest common denominator; i.e. A dragster that is lef outside in the sun and the UV exposure and weather degrades the webbing. Obviously that's the extreme circumstance. I don't agree, but I understand.

hi, in general aviation, seat belts are not replaced every two years, they sit out in the sun lots!!! especially open cockpit biplanes!!! when I worked for a dusting outfit, the stearmans were 20 yrs old, same belts that were installed in 1943 still in use in 1960-1970,s. If they deteriat that easily, then need better material/!!!! the two year rule is based off military jet fighters.

I think the two year rule is only about one thing,,,, MONEY.
We all know our belts aren't worn out after 2 years,, I'm going to recert mine soon, and they look as nice as the day I got them in 2012. The manufacturers were making too good of a product, and therefore weren't selling a lot of belts, so somebody griped to Glendora, and what do you know,,, a 2 year rule goes into effect! I'm sure Glendora makes out very well on this and the manufacturers "show their appreciation" to Glendora for said ruling. My 2 cents.

I'm sorry guys.. I know I'm not your typical go to 8-10 races a year Stock/SS guy, but I can guarantee you my belts are worn out after 2-2.5 years.. Deist.. Crow you name I've wore them out.. the rule is in place to take the liability off of the poor tech guy that just let your 10 year old belts pass tech, when you get seriously injured in an accident.. You people complaining that you don't want to replace them every 2 year would be the first ones in line to sue when the belt failed in an accident..

Is it truly a “Commitment to Safety”?

When was the last time that you saw an NHRA tech inspector check the seat belt mounting hardware and installation to insure that it complied with NHRA rules?

I believe that the seat belts used in NASCAR have a set procedure for the mounting of the seat belt hardware and routing of the belts and that was the cause of the belt failure. The belt failed, as I remember the news accounts, due to the installation not being in compliance with NASCAR rules and the belt was worn which caused it to fail.

Just having a 2 year rule on seat belt replacement doesn't free NHRA to not inspect and certify that the belts are installed per NHRA guidelines.

Correct installation and proper quality control of the seat belts is what turns them into safety equipment.

The 2 year rule is nothing but a money maker.

Just my thoughts,
Bob
