Terry since you did Cobra Jet heads you would probably agree.......
They were about the only heads I know of where it was common to bolt torque plates to them to do a VJ........

We did some in the shop I worked at on some local CJ Stockers before heads were messed with. A good running C/SA Mustang CJ ran maybe 11.20's at less than 120

I never used a torque plate to do a valve job on the CJ heads I did back in the day. Dick picked up a plate once and we tried it and could see no real difference in the way the valves fit the seats plus it was a pain in the ***** to do. .I did use a plate on some other brands. The first set I did for Dick Estivez was in 1969 and they came originally from Gapp& Roush. They were a mess and after I fixed them Dick and Morgan picked up close to 4 tenths in the Red SS/I stick convert. The CC's were off and none were equal and I was able to get NHRA (Greg X) to accept unshrouding the exhaust valve using a stone that was .250 thou larger than the seat cut even though it cut the chamber wall. That was worth about 1 1/2 MPH. Remember this was in 1969 and we all were still learning. Morgan ( one of the best today) went on to build killer engines on his own such as for Ken Milie and Bill Hawk. I ended up working for Greg X in Div. 1 for about 2 years (1974-75) then went to IHRA for 22 1/2 years and just did heads on the side ( I had a good good Govt. job with bennies) for a lot of guys in the early1970's. Freddies Moores SS/IA SD Pontiac Firebird, Danny Lattimores SS/J Olds Cutlass if you remember any of those cars, this was before all the "acid porting" in stock and porting and welding in S/S became the thing to do. I also showed Greg and Marty Barrett (Div. 3)the difference between the standard CJ head and the Candian heads and how you could tell the difference without pulling them off the engine. Greg X in turn took the time and taught me how to check a camshaft overlap and duration (pre 1985 rules). Anyway thats my story and Im sticking to it.

Greg and Marty were the tech guys who checked us at Indy in 1966......and DQ'ed both us as r/up and the class winner ??? Robinson in I/SA
Greg was tough and always worked us over with our sedan delivery and then with our Chevy II a few years later....He seemd to let up a bit when we set the H/S record at Atco in Sept. 1970.....
Trust me I remember all the cars you mention.........

The CJ Heads had a reputation for the seats moving on the end cylinders once they were torqued. It was a royal PITA to do a VJ with torque plate on the heads......

I did head prep for years .......Our shop gid a great deal of machine work for T/K's......for many years.......I did heads....rods...blocks.....for well over 10 years......I know the life.....very well

I had/have a pretty complete head shop in my garage and built many engines and did heads in there for years........I still do an occasional set and have a pair of heads to freshen up this weekend....Brodix....bracket car...

How about Jeff Tripp's SS/AM Monte Carlo? Definitely not the fastest car, but he drove it to Top Ten's in NHRA and IHRA in the same year.
