![]() My only question Jim is how do you guys come up with the distance approximations that you post with the close races? I ask because I just read the elimination coverage between Jason Line & Larry Morgan from the Las Vegas nat's, and after seeing the finish line shot on the tube, that looked much closer than a 9" finish line m.o.v. to me (per the .0026 finish line difference)? I took intrigue in this because in my race at San Antonio, the finish line difference in my race with George McMillan was .0029 and stated to be approx. 4". Since my car only did 84mph, and Larry's pro stocker did over 200mph, I'm curious of how my car could be closer to a 120mph stocker (who crossed the line ahead of me), than two cars that nearly ran the same speed (and much faster I might add than mine), when my m.o.d. (margin of defeat) was .0003 worse than Larry's?

Thanks to DRC for a hell of a good job. Like I said, if you don't like what you see, don't visit the site. And don't critisize.

Yeah, like the time my friend Denny Reed won the Mile Hi Nationals, after trying to win a national event for twenty years, and the headline on the National Dragster Stocker page read, "Denny FORD" (a Camaro racer at the time; Denny Reed's car was a Mustang) wins Stock at Denver."
Do you think that after 20+ years of running NHRA events, faithfully, He (Denny Reed) was offered a correction (after I TOLD them at ND) ? NOPE... not a word... A class act.... NOT. Insofar as Fast News goes, reporting a race is a TON of work, involving much time and effort. That WE get it for FREE, is a minor miracle, especially, considering its excellence and near comprehensive nature. I used to wait WEEKS; sometimes MONTHS (there was no National Dragster in the fifties) for race reports (such as they were) in Hot Rod magazine. So you can imagine how much ~I~ appreciate what these guys do for us.... When Larry Sullivan and his partner started up this trackside ("real time"???) reporting, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven... Kudos to all involved in the ongoing and timely production of the very excellent "FAST NEWS" from DRC!!!! ![]()

For anyone who is interested, here is a brief history. What is now DRC has its roots in the mid to late 1980s in the Motorsports forum on the old CompuServe Information Service. There were a group of us who would cover NASCAR, Indy cars, sports cars, drag racing and other types of motorsports by taking computers to the races and filing reports throughout the event. Someone wrote a program (for MS-DOS) that automated the process for NASCAR and other racing that runs laps around a circuit. Larry Sullivan wrote a similar program for drag racing. The group covering drag racing at the time on CompuServe included Ed, Larry, Rick Green, Dave Rowe, Dave Gerard, Bob Orme and the late Darryl Jackman (I hope I have not left anyone out). Back then, I was only covering NASCAR and Indy cars and did not become involved in drag racing coverage until 2001. When the Internet started to take hold in the 1990s, Ed was one of the first to recognize what was going on and created FastNews Network, which provides the content for DRC. What exists today grew from Ed's idea and work. Ed Dykes died in January 2000 when he was flying his private plane home from the IHRA banquet. After his death, Rick and Larry kept FastNews going since then. Larry continually updates the software, both to provide more information and to accommodate changes, such as four-wide racing or 1,000 feet), and Rick keeps us up and running. That's the brief version and I am sure I have forgotten someone or something that happened along the way. Jim Last edited by jwsamuel; 04-16-2011 at 07:47 AM. |
