It seems back in 1965, every Military guy bought a Tubro-Jet 396 when he got of out of the service.
I still remember a dark-blue 1965 Impala Sport Coupe 396 in our neighborhood, that the owner always referred to his car as being a "396 Turbo-Jet / Posi". Power-brake burn-outs all over the place, was the normal daily routine. It never did much at the Drag Strip (D/SA), but in the local area, it was a nice street machine. The 'standard' automatic transmission was 2-speed Power-Glide. |

1965 Chevelle 300 (2-Door Station Wagon). A very light car at #3304 lbs. and with an automatic.
The 'basic'................283/220 HP engine with the 2-Speed Powerglide got you into..........H/SA in 1965......(15.00 - 15.69 Wt/Hp) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 'performance'....327/250 HP engine with the 2-Speed Powerglide got you into..........F/SA in 1965.....(12.50 - 13.99 Wt/Hp) In 1968, these cars were highly desired, as they fit 'nicely' into K/SA (13.00 - 13.99 Wt/Hp). I do remember this combination in a car called "Mr. Magoo". Ran 14.40's in 1968/1969 and eventually got down to 14.10's, and won a bunch of Class Trophies in (1968 K/SA), (1969 L/SA) and (1970/1971 M/SA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 'high performance'....327/300 HP engine with the 4-speed got you into.......................C/S in 1965........(10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp) Not a desirable combination for 1968, as it put you on the wrong end of F/Stock (10.50 - 10.99 Wt/Hp). The 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 327/350 HP (Car Weight, #3165 lbs. = 9.04 Wt/HP) Found in A/Stock (8.70 - 9.49 Wt/Hp) in 1965. Take a basic Malibu SS 327/350 HP, add Cyclone Headers, 4.56 Gears, some mild suspension tweaks, 7" slicks and some timing adjustments.
