Better to give fans three full days than four days in which they are running slowly to fill the time.

They did. with TF,FC, prostock, TAD and TAFC included. That was a long time ago. Before the super categories and TS and TD. there was a ton of stock, super stock and modified cars at that time so the car count was probably real similar to the counts of today. I don't know why the program runs so slow now.

New England has been a three-day points meet since the track came back to NHRA 3-4 years ago.

You may be thinking of Virginia, which ran a two-day meet for a couple year, switched to three days and is back to a two-day schedule this year.

I can deal with the 3 day nationals, it is 50/50 for me, but it is 1 more day off work that we may not need.
The question about points races being 2 days, is certainly true, matter of fact I remember going to the NHRA points race at MIR and getting a time shot Sunday before eliminations , so I guess that was a one day points race. Not sure if that was the 70's or early 80's
