I work safety occassionally on one of the trackside trucks. We are always looking for people with helmets off or loosened belts even before they turn the corner. We try to politely ask the drivers to keep that stuff on until they are off the track. I can't tell you the number of times we have been flipped off, F bombed, and basically ignored by racers. Most racers follow the rules, but some dont. |

Well I can tell you 1st hand that your belts being tight helps you walk away. I had a pretty good one a few years back and walked away. My car was tight and my belts were tight. Nobody needed to tell me....its a personal thing. When I pull up to the water I still occasionally think of that crash. Let's hope none of our friends crash with loose belts and get hurt..... It can happen to you trust me....
We can start by letting them know how we feel.....I think it's an issue for every racer not necessarily NHRA....(kinda like your mom zipping up your coat..do we still need that...ok some of us do....lol)...I will say something to Brad...He's a great kid and I certainly don't want him hurt.... Nobody wants anything bad to happen to anybody...certainly many races are won with tight belts....its not necessary and its way too big of a risk to take.... So we all need to say ..... ..."Hey Jackoff...tighten up your belts before we're carrying you around in a box" Rock Haas |

Let's not forget the racer in the other lane...not everyone is a Brad P with thousands of runs in a fast car...those looking over their shoulder with lesser experience and heaven forbid the newly licensed driver in a fast car is just as likely to drive right into their opponent's lane or overcorrect and ruin everybody's day.

Rock,
Glad to hear you will mention it to Brad, I would hate to see him get hurt. I do agree that the racers need to be responsible for themselves, however, I also disagree that it isn't an NHRA problem. They must hold a consistent standard on rule application. While I realize they can not see every driver in every run, they can take a little responsibility with their publications and not print color glossy photos showing clear violations. Thumb back through the issues this year, Brad certainly is not the only one caught on camera and printed by the NHRA's publication. We used to fight this when the kids were in Jr.'s and it was tough. But when they see the big guys do it, then it gets even harder to get them to keep their belts tight. Thanks for taking an interest in this topic. See ya in Stanton?? Ron

As Mark mention.......there's alot that maybe going on. Makes one wonder ? what could a person possibly be looking "Down" at when at speed.
I heard of a couple of questionable runs this passed weekend @ Norwalk in sc....... I not suggesting a "Rat Squad" but maybe it's time that racers police things themselfs. Theres nothing wrong with an "Equal Playing Field" Just my 2 !! Rick

Dennis, I just can't seem to throw that paddle down..........lol. Hayden has to be 18 to enter a national event, or I would consider him driving at Indy.....after his performance at Joliet. I had confindence in him before the race but he did really suprise me........ I think I may have a good driver.
Yeah, maybe this should be my new stir! I don't understand the 18 yrs deal.........@ nat. events. They can run a div. and take out folks that are chasing world points but cannot contest a nat. event themselfs............ ????? Rick
