Has NHRA showed specs for duration/over and spring pressure for anything built after 1986 ?

Think so...all the LSx, LT1s Cams are available.

But that is a good question.
Need to create an updated Library of Cams for the Tech Department.
How can we help get them that information?

Here you go guys and gals, direct from the IHRA website

2013 IHRA Rulebook Revisions and Clarifications
12/30/13
p. 48 Pure Stock: Camshaft: replace 12/10/13 revision with the following: Camshaft must retain OEM lift, duration and overlap for horsepower claimed as verified by manufacturer supplied specifications. Aftermarket camshafts meeting specifications permitted. If complete engine package has not been supplied by manufacturer, the combination may not be classified for competition in Pure Stock.

Appears some of you (new car owners) have some work to do writing and contacting OEM reps to release the complete camshaft information to the HRA's.

Just trying to help, Good Luck

I know more than the average guy regarding class racing, definitely not as much as most of you, but I don't understand how all of this will work and see many problems. Our cam is a perfect example.

When I decided to try our hand in Pure Stock our Corvette wasn't legal in IHRA because they didn't have camshaft information. I contacted Mike Baker and got what he needed from Mark Kent at GM. He provided me with GM specs for the 2004 LS1 camshaft. I sent those to Bullet and John ground us a legal Pure Stock cam. Here is the card:

You'll notice the lift is 466/478. However, I did more research AFTER we installed the cam and if you go to NHRA's website and look at the Engine Blueprint Specification sheet for our particular application the cam lift is listed at 515/515.

So, which number is correct? Where did Mark Kent (someone who is in the know at GM) come up with 466/478 and where did NHRA come up with 515/515? And if GM was wrong do I have the incorrect duration also?

Very frustrating.

Scott

Relax Scott!
This is a golden opportunity to help IHRA. They are managing an eliminator that is becoming more popular. During the real Pure Stock era they had this same problem and did not get any better when the Blueprinted cams became the vogue.

There were racers running the letter of the law on one day and illegal the next. Racers raged and then the xHRA raged back. It was and ill relationship.

IHRA is a more racer centric racing body. By helping them with their game IHRA will make changes to make it work better.

The controversy over the new rules was an opportunity to protect our eliminator and keep it consistent. Cannot say enough good things about Norwalk. They listened and listened with grace!

This was the mistake of Stock and Super Stock to a different level.
Now Stock looks like SS light. They got so fast they had to adopt safety changes that moved them farther away from the concept of Stock.

IHRA Pure Stock is a lot closer to 1973 Pure Stock. By keeping the discipline we will not need the excessive safety changes to keep our cars safe. FWIW the number one rule in all sports is the safety of the participants and fans.

Not to rant on. Go do some research and help IHRA. They will not reject your efforts and you wil help the next racer with your cam set up.

What I think IHRA may do is simplify the cam selection like they did with the LT1 engines. LS1/2/3 will have their limited selection to help the cam builders and the tech inspection. The new cars will have their own issues. This is an opportunity for the car makers to support the sport. HINT!

Do your due diligence and research the LS1 cams for your car. Others should do the same and get concurrence. Mike Baker did his best from what information he had.

You may have the right cam or not. The larger cam may require a higher HP factor or not. Helping them with good information will make your combination arrive at the races without controversy.

This is what happened to Stock. Knowing some of these issues we have an opportunity to make Pure Stock thrive and have fun at the same time.

Hope this POV helps.

Dan

It's a 2004. I never stated that it was a 2001. Dan sometimes reports it as that ... most likely the same time he called me Steve during one of his "senior" moments.

As long as he doesn't get out of his car in the staging lanes and yell at everybody to "Get out of my driveway!"
