I raced Fords in the mid 60's but I have to admit the 55 - 57 Chevys dominated a lot of classes. They were plentiful, cheap to build, and fairly easy to maintain. I finally gave in and built a 57 Chevy 4dr wagon with a 265 2bl and sometimes won my class locally. I gave $15 for the body and rebuilt a 265 someone gave me. Probably did not have $400 in the whole car including headers and gears. My tow car was a 57 Sedan Delivery.

Ahhh, for the good old days when you could build a competitive car from parts that you brought home from the local junkyard.

In answer to the question, I'd have to say 57 Chevy. Lots of body styles and lots of engine combos.

Travis, that's cool. It would even be cool to tow with the wagon and race the sedan delivery!

I remember that car when he raced it at NY National. I absolutely loved it.

Today that motor is factored at 287 hp in stock and 300 hp in ss. The 327/275 is actually factored higher than that. Go figure.

I have to agree with Steve, but have to add Jere Stahl's 1966 Hemi 4 speed car. Hemi with a 4 speed and 7 inch slicks - Ya Hoo!
Super Stock Magazine said the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with the 440 6 Pak (A-12) was a "Good Stocker" and proved it by building one!

Threw in a '72, since I get 9 pic slots.

Between these Goats there were quite a few class & event wins, as well as nat records. Also, the '71 got 3 RU's in a row @ Indy, & held a nat record 5 years running.

And, as most here know, I could list quite a few more.

Hey, hope you get to build & race one from each year. If you contact Todd Kuhn, he might let you make a few passes in his '70 455, to see how you like it. Might inspire you to start building your own.

Also, I've read that there are plans to run the old Axemaker & Reuland '72 model, on a limited basis. You might be able to contact those connected with that car & get to drive it some, so you could be racing while you're building one of your own.

Hey, the old Ray Hunt '72 is for sale. Would be cool to put it back on the track. Done right, it might also be worth some money, when you're through racing it. The D-port 455 engine makes a good combo in a '72. Todd Hoven won a nat event & class @ Indy with this combo, back in around 2008, IIRC.

But, a quick scan of the '64-'71 GTO combos seems to show that a '68 or '69, with a #16 head 400 engine, would be the most competitive combo, without using high dollar round port heads. The NHRA hp factor is only 325hp. That's less than the same engine in a '68 Bird. IIRC, a few years back, Adam Strang set the F/S record in a '68. Tim Gillespie also ran a nice '68, which ran low 11's & qualified @ Indy.

Good morning Old School and to all,
I'm a GM guy but my memory is starting to fade some, wasn't there a ( I think) 64 or 65 GTO 389 4 speed car that had a functional style hood scoop from the factory. If someone could jump in and clarify that, I some how vaguely remember a Pontiac with that style hood and it was a steel hood , not a fiberglass replacement? Was there such an animal? I thought that was a nice looking car and there was a Light metallic blue hardtop example that used to race a N.Y. National speedway when I was a young lad.
