Trans break not working after switching Cases
Hello All.
We pulled the motor and treans out of our S/ST Camaro last fall to freshen everything up. As it turns out the Stock Case Power Glide bell was split about 3/4 of the way around. So I bought a ATI Case and Bell. Had a local trans guy switch everything from the stock case trans, to the new ATI case. Now the trans brake won't work, I have been told to pull out the rod and drill and tape it with a pan head screw. I have been told I need to weld a tip on the end of the shaft. I'm not a trans guy, what is all this about. Is there a longer shaft that can be bought or do I really need to do 1 of the above fixes. is this common or just my dumb luck. Slightly confused, how do I resolve this problem? Cal S/ST 1177 |

Re: Trans break not working after switching Cases
What makes you think it's something internal? I would make sure the Transbrake Solenoid had 12/volts going to it and you had a good ground first. Not unless you already been there-done that. Then I would make sure there was not an issue with the trans brake button or the cord.
Keep us posted. Good Luck........ |

Re: Trans break not working after switching Cases
Valve body alignment on the bolts can change the clearance on the exhaust valve .
I've seen some move as much a .050" ,which can make the difference between the brake working or not. Do you have a can solenoid or a pancake type ? ...The can type have more travel than the pancake and usually don't run into this problem . Also the ATI case comes with red shim washers that are intended to move the solenoid out to minimize the depth the valve goes in, did your builder use any of these without checking the depth of the valve ?

Re: Trans break not working after switching Cases
If the problem is not electrical (I.e. The solenoid is working) take the trans back to the Trans guy.
In my experience the ATI case is a direct replacement for the GM powerglide case. Something's not lining up or missing or miss assembled. Let us know what you find out.

Re: Trans break not working after switching Cases
sounds like you have an early model valve body, is the top hole tapped and plugged with the bottom hole drilled? You may have to modify the case or call ATI and get the correct valve body. Either one will work, call ATI they will explain what's going on. I have had this problem before and correcting the pump passage fix the problem.
