No, this was a white on white on white 70 or 71 Gt500 with the 428CJ motor in it. I don't remember exactly what he paid for it, but it was ***-stronomic dollars. It looks like a 30,000 dollar car to me, nothing fancy, not a show car.

You said you feel for us NHRA racers who are getting hosed by the board, well how about the average, true car guy, who's getting indirectly hosed by these rich, drunk, stupid
supposed "car guys"?
Ed - I guess I must be one of those asses - but I really don't care what mine are worth as they're not for sale .But if you owned some of these cars I'm sure your opinion would be different . No one forced any of those buyers to overpay if they indeed did - it's a no reserve auction at Barrett - Jackson ...and yes , I've been there several times to witness the action first hand .

BTW , the circus is coming to town next month - right in your backyard in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Convention Center - feel free to come as my guest as I have several cars at that auction and I'll be glad to show you around that world .....maybe I'll be able to sway your thoughts on this subject .....or not . And I'm not rich , drunk or stupid . Well maybe I do some dumb things once in a while ............And even you'll have to admit that I'm a true car guy .

Think I'll go out and turn some wrenches in the gold mine ...............

A quality frame-off restoration could easily exceed $80-100,000, which seems to be the return on most of the high-end cars. I don't think it is overpaying at all. If you can afford it, who cares how much you spend? If most of us sold our racing operations we could take the money and go bid on a nice $30,000-70,000 car. And there are many nice muscle cars sold in that range.

The problem, or negative affect the TV auctions have, is that the guy with the average car compares his mildly restored, imperfect "driver" to a 100-point professionally done restoration. And from 50 feet two identical-looking cars could be anything but identical. Of course not every car that crosses the block at BJ, Mecum, or the others is a full resto, but the lesser cars go for less money and there are a ton of nicely sold cars at fair market prices.

There is no way a middle-class person making an average wage can come to grips, or have the rational, of a guy who is loaded and can afford to drop hundreds of thousands of dollars on a toy. It's no different than average father walking his son through the pits. These guys oohhh and aaahhh over our cars and trailers and can't even imagine having a race program like many of us have. They probably say, "how do these people afford this?"

If you are in the market for a muscle car, what's better than putting yourself in front of hundreds of potential cars to buy? Even if you overpay a little, it's still cheaper than flying all over the country looking at car after car. Plus they certainly enjoy the excitement of the event.

How many people think we are idiots for spending an entire weekend at a track to get what can amount to less than 5 minutes driving our cars?

No one forces anyone to bring a car there, or to buy a car there.

They are investors looking to turn them over when the market goes up nothing more.

I enjoy watching the shows strictly for the love of the cars as a car show - nothing more. I know I will not be able to afford these cars, but it is nice to be able to see the cars go across the block and talk to my wife or kids about the various models. The biggest drama I see are the number of commercials. Speed cannot show more than three BJ cars without going to a commercial break and sometimes just one car then to commercials. That is the shame of the BJ show. Mecum does not have the number of commercials and I do not catch much of the RS auctions.

There are pros and cons to having the "no reserve" bids. You can certainly take it in the shorts on some of the cars. The 427/400 66-67 Corvette that sold for 50k without the original motor seemed like a good buy. I know if I were to buy a mid year Vette, it would be one that I could drive around without fear of road debris knicks or worse. I do not think many people could replicate that particular car for that amount of money.

Have you noticed how quick or delayed the auctioneer is on dropping the hammer? Seems like they are pushing some cars across and drop the hammers too quick while other cars they are creating and dragging on the drama well past any further bids.

I'll continue to watch the auctions although the tv at work does not have Speed or HD Theatre channels. So I'll catch the reruns of BJ and Mecum when I can.

Question Re: Barrett-Jackson

I think they spent too much time on the Kennedy ambulance. Probably to have enough documentation to protect themselves from a possible law suit... They basicly kept saying buy as you think it may be on your own opinion.....Did not want to mis-represent and then be held liable .....What y'all think ?
