P.S. The engine in the El Camino was a 348 with 3 carbs.

Terry, thanks a lot for all that information!!! I well remember the DESERT MOTORS '64 427 AA/SA car but had NO IDEA of the connection to the El Camino that started the HydraMatic dance that ended so badly,,,, Can you imagine the profound effect this ensuing Hydro debacle had on Mike Schmitt, his having started the whole thing? At one time, in about 1970, every Stock Class record from about E/SA down to the bottom Automatic class (N/SA???) was held by some sort of Chevy/Hydro combination. Hell, there were '57 Fuelie motor (283 HP) sedan deliveries in profusion... Marvin Ripes must have gotten a huge kick out of it when NHRA finally said, "NO MORE!!!"

Er, Bill; I think the gentleman in question's name was "Schmidt," not "Schmitt."... not that it matters, now, 45 years later....

Know this is an old thread.. But the picture of him was on facebook just this past week
It looks to me that C/SA back in 1961 was 11.89-12.49 lbs/hp. It looks like the only engine that fits this break in the el camino was the single 4 barrel carter at 305 horsepower. What am I missing? |

I believe that Butch Leal ran an El Camino combination on the west coast prior to joining the Mickey Thompson organization.
