Default Re: How to Improve S/G, S/C, S/St

Step 1)

Drop each class one full second. Almost all S/C dragsters can run 7.90, almost all S/G cars can run 8.90. (some S/St cars may be out of luck with 9.90 though).

Step 2)

Take away computerized throttle stops.

To hit the indexes, tune each vehicle's performance with A) timing; B) weight; C) shift points; D) mechanical throttle stops - adjustable bolt under the throttle pedal; or E) restrictor plates. But no timers of any sort. Not throttle stop timers, nitrous timers, or even shift timers.

The top end stop idea isn't really workable. I am on the stop 3.0 seconds. If I could only use a top end stop I think I'd be off the throttle within 5.0 seconds (1/8th mile) coasting for the next 4.9 seconds. Surely that's even a worse show than you get now?

Or maybe NHRA Unleashed replaces stock/superstock/supergas/superstreet and replaces it with true no-electronics index racing from 8.50 - 13.00. (that would never happen, right? Or could it......)

Piedmont Dragway has a class they one twice a month on Thursday nights that is 7.49 index 1/8 mile, no stops, no transbrakes, no anything, five tenths pro tree no deep staging. This class has between 15 and 25 cars on a THURSDAY night. The attendance is up on these nights when this class runs. Its side by side racing and even going that slow the fans enjoy it. When we were there myself and our other announcer made these guys into local hero's and it was all enjoyed.

To answer the question, no stops, and make it no delay boxes as well if you want to put the driver back in the seat.

I think we could all agree that the fans don't like it. SSGN and JimR have good ideas. Another idea could be to have a break out MPH as well, that would eliminate some of the holding and keep the cars a little closer down track. I think that would also reduce the cost to compete, you would'nt need a T/S car that runs 170+ in S/G. Run your T/S car in T/S. Just a nice backhalf car with a mild big block could run S/G and a backhalf small block could run S/ST...affordable! More wheel stands like the S/S cars and Stockers. Did you ever notice how many fans watch at the starting line as opposed to the finish line. It's about 99%, that's where the neat stuff is happening, the burnout, the tree, the hole shot, THE WHEEL STANDS, and going thru the gears! That's where the fans are, and that's where the Super classes cut the motor off. That's like you and your girl friend gettin all hot and bothered, strippin down, .401 bulb, gettin ready for action, and she starts puttin her clothes back on....that's throttle stop sex! It sucks too! Race like you like your sex...WFO. You and everybody that watches you will enjoy it more. Now you will have more competitors, more fans, and more of your money! Whats not to like?

How could anyone ever expect to win in one of these classes without a t/stop and a timer ?? Everyone knows that you HAVE to have big MPH to
win! C'mon guys, if you lower the 10.90 index to 10.50, I'll have to buid a new engine. I guess I'll have to convert it to a Super Stocker.

The day they take timers out of the class will be the day I give a damn about the super classes again. And it would be an attractive, competitive class to go race in.

Unfortunately, most of the current super racers would probably bail. Ingenuity would trump $$$ and MPH.

They like their little drag racing country club environment, I don't think they want anyone messing with it.

Could we remove the throttle stops! I really enjoy watching T/D and T/S ,bracket racing you may say, but entertaining none the less. Braking systems are so much better now. Does anyone have a better idea than throttle stops. I love the color and the engineering that these class bring to NHRA. I'm looking forward to Indy. CR
After watching all of the qualifying round at Indy and at the Div 1 Englishtown meet. I have to say that you didn't have to have a thousand HP but it helped. I was quite entertained by the close racing and didn't see many people leave their seats on Friday at Indy. First round was very enjoyable. Most racer have no problem with the timers and some traditionalist want to return to no delay. I was wrong, no biggy here since I'm wrong most of the time. Claude
