I purchased a new set of Richmond 5:86 Pro gears. When I went to install them, I found that the yoke of the driveshaft wouldn't fit like it did on the Richmond gears coming out of the car. I struggled to make it fit, but I got it to sort of fit with hitting it with a mallet. It gets better! The small bearing in the rear is supposed to no slop float. When I tried to get the pinion in the rear, it sort of got pressed in. It took me over a half hour of banging on the pinion to get it out of the housing. So I put a caliper on it to find that the pinion was .002 bigger bearing surface of the gear that came out. I called Richmond gear and they told me that it was in tolerance and that I should emery cloth it to fit. I have had at least 15 sets of Richmond gears and never had a problem, these gears were manufactured in Italy. The rep at Richmond said that they can't do anything for me. Not happy with Richmond at all!!!
So, if you have a spare set of gears from Richmond in your trailer in case you have breakage, you better check to see if they are the correct measurements. I'm taking the pinion to a machine shop to get it cut, at the track you're done! Casey Miles 248H Stock Last edited by Casey Miles; 06-27-2019 at 07:55 PM. Reason: grammar |

Richmond hasn't been Richmond for a few years now. That Richmond is a Motive Gear in a Richmond box. I bought a Motive D-60 Pro Gear for my car, didn't have any issues with the installation...but the spares on my shelf are neither Motive or Richmond...

US gear. I used to be lucky to get 100 runs on Charlene's car and mine with the Richmond gear. Switched to US gear and have over 200 on mine and are still quiet.

Put it in a lathe and use sand paper to get it to the size you want

Does US Gear make 5:86 for a 12 bolt, if so, I’ll never buy a Richmond gear set ever again! Casey Miles 248H Stock |
