I've heard of Canadian guys having troubles aswell . I'm told by the police that there are reciprocal agreements so that you are governed by the requirements where you and the vehicle are licensed. Some States didn't get the memo or they just don't care.

I think also, starting this year. To get a med card you have to an approved doctor.

CDL medical testing MUST be done by an APPROVED on the list Medical person--- most times your personal physician even tho they are qualified to do the exam probably is not on the Approved list---MUST be an approved Physician/medical person ---Check in your area depending on where you live you can usually find one might even contact any large trucking companies or truck stops in your locale--FED 387

I think I would look at getting a CDL on a state by state basis.Don't know all the rules, but having a cdl for the last 30 years I know a couple.
If you are pulled over by the dot you will be expected to know all propers when doing a level 1-2 -3 inspection. Pre trip/post trip/ air brake test etc.No more going to traffic school to erase a speeding ticket. Not valid for cdl holders. For you drinkers blood alcohol is lowered for cdl holders. Officer can be a little more "picky" on inspections and on the fact of "for hire"
Need to check with your own state on "intra V. inter" state trips. Will a log book be required? If so 11hrs driving in a 14 hr period.
As John say's so many gray areas, I would consider state by state.

Also:
you are held to CDL standards regardless of what you are driving.i.e. semi or car
