Bobby,

I vaguely remember one of the car magazines ran a test on a vehicle with and without an air cleaner - don't remember anything other than the results which showed the combination WITH made more HP. Plus the fact that some tracks are dustier than others (like the 2.8 mile trip at Route 66 ) make me think that having an air cleaner makes sense. Obviously there's more to it than just bolting one on, and an open element has got to be better than the stock single snorkel, just part of the tune-up! It just has to look like OEM, whatever that is today!!

Good advice, NHRA Techs are Human and falliable, and well, there is a LOT across a LOT of different classes that I am sure anyone of us would get jumbled in our head from time to time. Most only run 1 or 2 classes, the Techs have to know ALL Classes....

When I was a plumber/pipefitter we went to a "State Unified" code, moving away from all the municipal codes and everything changed I only learned the new, but many established and intelligent inspectors would say "No, no saddle valves not allowed" while pointint to them on some add on humidifiers of a commercial install. My answer would go something like "Yeah, I think Akron had that code, I heard that, this state unified code is so confusing, even to me, see look, now THEY decided its ok to use on non-potable water, can you believe that ? But see....look....(while pulling and thumbing to the section) and look isnt that stupid ? but it says you can do it, and the guys we had here were from local xxx on travel cards..." But It didnt make the inspector feel like a dumbass, and it didnt put him down, meantime he learned something in a non-confrontational way.

People wanted to know why I was the youngest Journeyman pipefitter in 219....It was because I never had 1 single item fail on numerous large commercial builds.....but more importantly that was because I never pissed and inspector off

Attended my first race this past weekend at Maple Grove in several years. The stuff I saw on Stock Eliminator cars blew me away. Not the technology, but the blatant disregard for the rules. Stockers are so bogus today it is ridiculous.
After all these years Super Stock still seems normal to me.

Back in the late 70's we had a tech guy paying close attention to the top of our Hemi car's motor. During tech in. we though he was checking the aircleaner bottom.
Later in teardown he asked us to take the aircleaner base off, touched the intake manifold with what looked like a pen, then told us we were disqualified. I said a couple of "what do you mean M F,s"
And he proceeded to tell me we had an aluminum manifold and it was a 1970 car so we were disqualifed
I almost could not believe what I was hearing. Went over to Greg X explained and asked him how he was going to do with one less tech people.
That guy never came near our car again.

LOL....some tech inspectors are there just to be there and BS their way into the job like they know all. I have run across several over the years who just dont know much of anything about stockers and S/S cars. Im the first to admit I dont know all that much about the new stuff with throttle bodie, FI, computers, etc. Any dummy who is at least half of a car guy should know that the street hemi (and others) came with an alum. intake (65 race hemis had magnesuem intakes). These are the first guys who will sneak off and watch the races or BS with their buddies instead of doing the job. Greg X was one who knew it all by heart. Im glad I was able to work with him and the late Marty Barett from Div. 3.

My best ever was the "you'll pass tech as soon as you install factory floor mats"
(Read the rule book and determine how this braniac came up with this. And yes, he was serious!)

I think what NHRA is looking for are the aluminum circle track air cleaner bottoms that a lot of racers are running. These are not close to oem but racers have been running them for years.
