I've asked before, why can't the entries be extended to 64 cars? A nice full ladder

I think the alternate is a good idea, but
Is it really necessary? It might be a great for the Racer, but what will it do for NHRA? After all this grade Point system is for their benefit not the racer. The system seems to be working well for NHRA. It has racers attending a lot of divisional and National Open events to earn Grade Points. This system creates a need for grade points. Without that need a lot of racers would pass on Division races and National Opens. NHRA needs the GP system to help sell and populate the Divisional events. When a track owner buys a divisional or National Open they want & need car count to come out with a profit on the event. I find it difficult to believe NHRA would do anything to dilute the value of the GP system that is working the way they intend it to work. Can't tell we might even see a Grade Point + system in the future that enhances the program. JMHO

NHRA will never do it,but I think having a dedicated alternate list is a great idea.
The way it is now,a Grade 6 might not be able to get into a race. However, two Grade 7 guys can withdraw in the middle of the night (like the election) and get their buddy (who might be a Grade 2) into the race. |

I am all for expanding the car count, just a guess why they don't go to 64 cars.

Back in the day, there wasn't a quota for National Events. NHRA would mail out a list of events and you would pick which ones you wanted to enter. About 6-8 weeks before that race you would get an entry form to fill out and pay for your entry. All of a sudden, NHRA noticed that there were 100+ cars at a National and only 50 at the Divisionals. Back then there wasn't any Live drag racing on TV. We had to wait a few weeks to see the race. Now with live TV, it's vital for the racers to be ready on-time. I believe this is the driving force behind lower car counts. I'm sure NHRA makes for $$$ from TV than having a few more sportsman cars enter. It's always all about the $$$$.

For those that may not know, the way the online national event entry system is now is that withdrawals need to be done by 12:00 noon PT on the Monday before an event and entries can be submitted up to 1:00 pm PT on the Monday before an event. So there is an hour when people can enter after all of the withdrawals are made if there are any open quota spots. The only thing is that you need to be able to get on your device to do it during that hour and it's "first come, first served".
