If I was starting from scratch, with an I6 as my goal power source, it would be an AMC. Chev as a second choice.

Thanks for all the info and help so far guys, out of all the racing I have done this may be the friendliest forum I've been on.

With all the great insight I've gotten, I'm down to a slant-six Mopar (Aspen Wagon?) or an AMC then, maybe 60's Rambler?

The AMC 6 is a good choice for a strong bottom end, but choose carefully, carburation is limited to a 1 bbl on most years, with only a few with 2bbl. .....Same for cam lift .....The '77 is the best choice, and has been run sucessfully by several racers, most notably, the infamous Ed F. .....As far as racing a 6 goes, any of them is a challange, ask Billy Nees, by far ,in my opinion, one of the more sucessful 6 cyl Stock racers.....Tom

If you have a Fairmont with a 200 then play with it. It's not that bad a combo at 115 hp and it's a 10 cent build except for trans and converter.

Hmmm, the car is REALLY clean and low mileage. I was down to it or Ed suggested a Rambler American, which I also have one of. Guess I have some thinking to do. Thanks so much everyone.

Oh yeah, I don't have a rulebook at hand yet, could anyone maybe tell me what class the Fairmont would fall into? It's a coupe.

I don't see a Fairmont that's any good.
Here's your car : 79 Aspen 2 dr cpe, 225 2bbl @ 140 hp ...V/SA.
Easy to build low gearset 904, using the later OD parts

Stay in the 6 cyl class...V

Case closed.

I have to agree with Mark about the Aspen but don't close the case yet. Mark, he has a clean body to start with. Where are you going to find a decent Aspen? Maybe in your backyard but not in mine. The 200 motor isn't showing the correct factor in the guide. We were looking for a place to play with a Mustang some time ago and got that factor changed to 115 based on a paper mistake. The man to talk to is Dave Ley. At 115 it is a V car and again he has one.

In another post, you indicated that the Fairmont was an '80. The 200 in that year is 85hp, factored to 140. It's a natural "R" car and I think it would be tough to get that combo to be competetive. You could run at 2690 min. in "R" and would need to make around 180 flywheel hp to run the index(14.35). I don't know if the '80 carb is larger than my '72; the head is considered to be a little better. It has larger intake valves and larger chambers but the pistons are also flat top compared to the earlier dish. Can't tell you much about the runners - yet. Cam lift is the same. My Maverick is almost as light and is a natural "V" package. A second and a half is a bunch between "R" and "V".

My uneducated evaluation.

WOW, this has been an eye opener! Just when I think the Mopar is a goner, here's a good case for it, though I don't have one at the ready, except access to a 78 wagon. When I think more about the Ford, hmm, not so good. The Rambler is still an open case though...

How long did it take you guys to figure out what to build, and why did you build the combos you did, if I may ask? I'm looking for all the insight I can before picking up a wrench...
