Hi Mark, incase you've forgotten, 1985 Pontiac Sunbird Turbo. Original engine, trans, converter AND final drive ratio went 14.03 on 14.95 B/FS index in 1985. I haven't raced the car since. The only things that I changed were a fresh head gasket, a fresh turbo (the right one) and 20 X 8 M/Ts. In fact, it DID win class at Indy on a solo run.

Billy, are you sure you are talking about that happening in 1985? Jim

Daran, I had an '81 diesel Toro converted to a gas 350 and if I remember correctly, there's so little room to the rear of the engine bay, the headers would have to look like some old 'Can-Am' stuff. I suppose you could do fenderwell type, or maybe through the hood like a 'puller'. Smiley face here.

Billy, the new car prep guy at the dealership I worked at in the early '80's came back from checking out one of those Sunbirds and said to me "man, you gotta take this thing for a drive, it's FAST!'. I said, "yeah, right." "I'm serious man, it'll impress ya". I grabbed the keys and tossed the dealer plate up on the dash. (this was a stick car) Got it rolling, shifted into second gear and 'up on the turbo' and nailed it. I hope nobody was watching as I ducked that license plate as it went whistling by! Thing almost took my head off on it's way to the rear package tray! Oh yeah, I WAS impressed that a 1.8L could pull that hard. Fun stuff.

OK, That's better. I remember when that happened and I know I can't remember all the way back to 1985! Jim

I think there's a couple other little killer combos out there that I may keep under my hat for a little bit... Billy, do you still have the car I borrowed to drive back and forth between PA and Ohio? I think we figured that one to have a great deal of potential. I know another combo that will run the index completely untouched, which I think would have a huge amount of potential just by dropping the exhaust and putting a set of 20" M/T's on it...

Hi Billy. Actually it was 2004 (50th) Indy. ET was 14.22, for those keeping score at home. It did run 14.11 on the brakes at the Dutch that year. How are things up on the "ranch"?
