I wanted to replace the original stock tank with a fuel cell. I wanted the 4 gallon fuel cell, filter and pump inside the trunk. I came up with this idea of cutting the top out and mounting the bottom of the tank in the car so from the outside it looks original. We had a new stainless tank left over from another project so Brian cut out the top and used a piece to fill in the hole for the sending unit.

Why isn't it legal?

It doesn't matter I don't think I will be racing in NHRA. I will race at NMCA or NMRA events in the future.

Lots of hairs to split here. Fuel cell may be used. When fuel cell is used stock tank must be removed. Is cutting it in half "removing" it? Stock tank may be removed. If removed it must be replaced with material equal to or greater than the original. If he cuts the top off, does the bottom become a legal thickness replacement? I'm not a tech, but it looks like the tank has been removed and the bottom half of it has been used as the replacement material.

BTW, I'm prejudiced. I love this car.

That car may need wheelie bars/bar.If so the bottom half of the tank may not allow it.As of a few years ago NHRA required straps on the fuel cell, don't know if the rule is being enforced...gsa612

Straps are only required on plastic tanks, along with ground wire to filler cap mount. As long as a proper firewall is installed I don’t see anything wrong with it. In fact it is pretty sanitary!
