How come the 70-71 318 has 185 hp and the 73 has 169 hp? Specifications are basically the same.

So as I read this in the classification guide, a '73 'cuda 318-2v falls in as an R,T,U combo ? If so, yes Rocket Ship and Possible #1 Indy Qualifier. But definitely not a dime Rocket. Good luck finding one too !

So imagine NHRA dropping all 318 2bbl combos to a reasonable hp across the board for more readily available/cheaper body styles like a later duster/dart or volare/aspen..they afraid of a little competition for the mustangs and mavericks?? Sounds like more competition $$ at the gate..common sense once again eludes them!

So, more about the class it would fall in or type of car? If I remember right, I had read about the engine in a certain year Corvette and Camero being the same but the Corvette was rated much hp higher. Was that because the Vette was more efficient?

Years ago I was studying the guide and I thought a 1995 Ford Escort might work. I bought one for $400. Chris Padgett reground the stock cam, I had the stall speed raised in the stock torque convertor, put a stock header from an Escort GT on it and squeezed the fuel pressure regulator in a vice to raise the fuel pressure. Didn't do anything to the engine, not even a valve job. Might have bought new spark plugs. I don't remember. Stock wheels and tires. It had a factory tach and temp gage. It ran .45 under the index. I rented it out for a few races, then sold it for $2000.
Anybody can afford to build a stock car, it's just a matter of how fast you want to go.

There's a way to get those very same skills...for those who who are interested and want to try, dig in! You may fail, but you learn something every time.

Note that the 69 318 is at 172, same specs as 73. A 69 charger can run R, T and U.
