One year at the Epping race Gene Monahan was driving the old Gold Digger L/SA '69 Chevelle wagon and me in my A/SA '64 Plymouth, Gene stumbled off the line and slowed, I blew by him and figured he broke and went into cruise mode after half track until I looked into my side view mirror and saw him almost next to me and I almost soiled myself! I got back in it just in time to get there first! But man that would have been embarasing.
He drove by me at the scales with a big grin on! |

Been there and almost done that..
I was at Douglas, WY the week before the Mile High Nats in 2002 and didn't make a pass that was worth a scrap. I get to race Donnie Beeler in the first round. I still was working on the car to find an 8000 foot tune. So I dial the car at the slowest pass that I had made, figuring I could always slow it down. So I get about a 1 second head start and as I leave the line, I say to myself that it felt pretty good. So I'm looking in the mirror after I get into high gear and I can't find him.. I finally find him and he had broke about 100' out, so I just get off the gas and I am coasting toward the finish line.. All of a sudden the light bulb comes on and I don't have a clue what my car would run. I slam on the brakes and run right on my dial in.. I figure that if I broke out, Beeler would still be laughing about it.. It's just one of the many ways to beat yourself.. Bob
