Attached is copy of index system used in the mid seventies, when I mention this system I always get a blank stare as no one seems to remember it . Play with the math based on todays et's for various classes and it is scary.

Jimmy I remember when they went into effect. I started running C/SM the year they started that. We could only run one tenth under, no dialing down.

They called it a Par System. All class's had a 3 didget index. C/S was 4.27 C/SA 4.46
The C/SA car would get a .19 head start. First car to finish line would win .they did this so that any car could run against any other car. A/D index was 0.00 would give 4.27 head start to C/S. A /D Record was 7.50. If you add 7.50 to 4.27 =11.77 that was the ET a competeive C/S should run.The C/S record was 11.72 |

It already did ..in 75-76
The indexes or par numbers were loosely based on what was being raced at the time. BBC's, hemis, CJ's , 350's, 327's ,283's etc and so on down. Therefore you needed a soft factored..what some would call a bogus combo, to beat the system. Before long all the common cars started staying home because they couldn't win anyway. By 1976 , breakout racing was brought back to the WCS Divisionals, and by 1977 ,I think to the nationals too. The great Par System that was supposed to be the end of brakelight racing lasted roughly two years...due to economic reasons. Then NHRA came up with a better, more profitable scam.. Never lower the indexes,and then letting you dial under them, so just about anybody had a chance to win.

Jimmyparker, in the mid 70`s we raced stock off the national record and they didn`t weight the car with the driver, I weighted close to 300 pounds and some of the guys I raced against in my class at indy (1974 I think )less than 150 pounds. the first year I raced my chevy II we had to use L60/15 style street tires, cheater slicks with tread, as I remember, but I`m getting old and that was long time ago. In division 2 in 1975 the hot ticket was a W through Z/SA 6 cylinder Chevelle.A Florida racer in a 6 cylinder glide Chevelle convertible won the Warner Robins points meet with ease.Check out the results for the Sports Nationals at Bowling Green that year,finalist were a Corvair and a 6 cylinder Chevelle wagon.
