I am working on my New Roadster, and will try to run S/G next season, there are a few things I know the car will have, there are a few things Im not sure what to use..
I know the car will be coil over 4-link rear with a Torsion front, 16-33's rear, 24 spindle mount fronts, body is a 27 roadster, trans will be a glide... other than that I am lost... I am a FORD guy, and would love to stay with FORD power.. but.. would consider a Chevy if I needed to.. how fast does the car NEED to run to make a good S/G car? can I build it to run close to .90, and not use a stop? is there a big advantage going .90 @ 170 mph? do I need a delay box? if a stop is needed who's is easiest to use? would a big block be better than a small block? Thanks in advance for any help.. trying to get a pair of cars so my Son and I can start running Divisionals next year |

As fast as your budget allows, 9.90 @ 150+ IMHO "can I build it to run close to .90, and not use a stop?" Yes, but unless you can rotate your head 180 degrees like an owl, I wouldn't recomend it. "is there a big advantage going .90 @ 170 mph?" In my opinion, yes. The race is in front of you giving you a little more time to make decisions. "do I need a delay box?" Probably "if a stop is needed who's is easiest to use?" I like Dedenbear stuff, alot of people like the #1 Stop stuff. "would a big block be better than a small block?" It's usually easier and less expensive to make more horsepower with a bigger cubic inch motor (big block) These are just my opinions of course. Good Luck |

sounds like all good answers.....170 in a roadster is a little fast but certainly 160 would be a good start.....about 1000 horsepower will get you around 160 depending on you car weight and aero....Dedenbear stuff is very good....for delay and throttle stop control....the older you get the less you like to look back.....good luck...

9.90 @ 147-152 is acceptable "can I build it to run close to .90, and not use a stop?" Way too tough, especially with weather changes over the course of a weekend at a divisional "is there a big advantage going .90 @ 170 mph?" Yes, faster is better to get the race in front of you, but the cost diff between 150 and 170 is HUGE "do I need a delay box?" If you are gonna run a throttle stop, most boxes today come as a combined delay box/ts controller.. "if a stop is needed who's is easiest to use?" 1 Stop or Dedenbear, my choice is an under the carb air powered (either brand) "would a big block be better than a small block?" Too much money to run a big power SB unless you have access to some really good parts cheap...You can build a really inexpensive Chevy 468 that will run 150 in a light chassis.. Like others, just my humble opinion...

Thanks guys..
I have gotten alot of good advice from both places I posted this.. as well as a few emails.. I guess I need to start looking at what delay box, and t stop i want.. I think I am going to use the parts for the Big Block Ford I have.. not lacking much to make a 557" motor with decent heads. |

Dont get caught up in all the big hipe of needing to go fast!
I race a s/g small block car that runs 140 on a good day and I win my share of rounds. If you are a good bracket racer you will do fine at the stripe. Building a motor that can run 160 will cost you 20 grand plus! And then figuring out how to manage all that power could be tough. Its all about cutting a light and running the number. |

True, but I stand by my statements. Unless you are comfortable driving the stripe with a 15 to 20 MPH defecit, you are at a disadvantage. If you are at least in the middle of the pack, the gap in rates of closure (ft/sec) isn't so great and the race will be more side by side at the stripe.

Who said he didn't want to spend money......?....We have Reher Morrison engines in our cars and they were well worth the coin.....I was just stating my opinion........

I unfortunatly have to park this project for a little while.. the guy suppodes to take the Mustang backed out.. so I still have a NMRA car, and a few thousand lighter in the wallet from buying the rodster stuff.. but I will keep plugging.. I may try to run the Mustang in S/ST for the rest of this year to get some grade points at least... it will run 9.5's but only on the bottle.. I can go 10.7's off of it.. |
