One year at Gainsville on a rain out. They did random
pairings. They picked a lane and the third car back in that lane. I got lucky it was me, waited till the last car to see if it was a by. Got lucky. Hammer |

As other people have said, the bye is chosen randomly. All the winners are then put on a ladder for the second round which is determined by how far they ran under the index in round one.
