That was Dave Anderson's death at the wheel of the "Pollution Packer" rocket dragster at the IHRA National Event in '74. He also took out two crewmen for a C/Dragster in the shutdown area.

Bret,
I have an old 8mm movie from the Gatornationals from I believe 1974. If I remember correctly, The Pollution Packer crashed there too. I was thinking that was the crash that took Anderson's life. Do you remember who was driving the car at the Gators? I think I remmeber Capt. Jack McClure was there with his rocket kart also but I'm getting old and some of the memories are a little blurry these days.

Ron, that was the crash of the "Free Spirit" rocket dragster in which Russell Mendez was killed.

Thanks. I knew it was a rocket dragster and that the driver was killed, I just didn't remember which car/driver. Both deaths were tragic. I think today it would be much safer. Between both Anderson and Mendez it spelled the doom of rocket cars at NHRA tracks.

Anyone have an aerial shot of the 1st (original) Hallsville, Tx dragstrip? I grew up racing at the 2nd strip that is now levelled. I have never seen any evidence of where the original strip was other than it being about a 1 mile from the latest strip.
