If I remember correctly, the mfg'rs of the Hans and Safety Solutions units ( I have the pro-rage) tell you to NOT wear a neck collar with a restraint, it will interfere with proper fit and operation...I know with the rage, I dont see how I could wear the collar and not have it mess with the teathers and release strings...

Also if you wear a restraint, you must have a head sock or helmet skirt...

Question Re: neck collar

the only places I see a skirt or sock required here is for FRONT ENGINE or Supercharged or turbocharged vehicles or in some instances Nitrous cars---be damned if I can find where in the 2012 rule book OR 2012 amendments that with a HANS you MUST use a sock or skirt---please enlighten me where does it say that--I looked thru the rule book for over an hour and I do not see that anywhere---not talking about any Alcohol or Nitro classes either--thanx Comp

I just received an email from NHRA tech, Pat Cvengros, You do not need the neck collar BUT you will need the head sock or skirted helmet.
Here is the email content.

If I decide to use a HANS type device, (not a class requirement) while racing in SG and/or SC.

1. Do I still have to use a neck collar?

2. If no neck collar, do I have to use a head sock or shirted helmet?

Thanks,
Dan Foley

No you would not be required to use a neck collar if you used a head and neck restraint system. You would however need a head sock or skirted helmet.

You're right finally found it it is under the PROTECTIVE CLOTHING section not in the helmet or neck collar restraint area---

Exclamation Re: neck collar

hey smart ***----it is not necessary to wear both the HANS & the donut
ONE OR THE OTHER is OK---as far as the head sock we ran using a HANS all of 2010 and most of 2011 NEVER HAD A SOCK OR A SKIRT nobody ever questioned it---maybe we just got lucky and got away with something BUT if we had known that it was mandatory no problem we would have gotten one---not trying to skate on the rules just never knew we needed it---as far as being adamennt YOU CAN USE A HANS WITHOUT A COLLAR if you want to use one it's up to the racer but it is not necessary---as I said one or the other is OK--- end of discussion

You need two things: whiplash protection and fire protection. A collar provides both. A head-and-neck device only provides the former, so you need a sock or skirted helmet for the fire protection. This is not new, this has been in place since head-and-neck devices were approved.

FWIW, I wear a Hybrid Pro with a head sock.

Thanks Chris. I didn't think this was new info either.
