Mark Y,

My '65 300 Deluxe Wagon at the original 283/220 classification weighed 3318 lbs., which was la natural 15.00 lb. weight break car. As Mark B. explained, they did away with Q, and it became an R car and that's how it's listed in the 1976 rulebook "Classes R ---- 15.00 to 15.99". At it's natural HP and weight, it was always in the 15.00 weight break class until they started factoring engines. Even at 235 HP the 300 Deluxe is still 14.11 at natural weight and can still run N at 3695 lbs., which we did for years. Now at 227 HP it would only have to weigh 3575, only 105 lbs over it's original weight.

Why "Q" and "O" were confusing in SS but not in Stock is beyond me, but thanks for reminding me Mark.

That's right. Now I remember . Don't forget, there weren't dial -ins to look for. They'd just look for the class and then the correct record or later, index.
Somebody must have blew it one time at a Nat'l , so that was the solution.

It had to be early 75 at least before they changed that.

When they moved SS/Q to R what happened to cars like Jimmy Parker's 66 Chevy 4 door running R with the 283 220hp? Maybe we could wake up Parker to fill us in....Sorry, know this is about station wagons, but would like to know....

Gents,
When Stock was consolidated with Superstock in '72 the 16 lb class was SS/R and then, as Jerry stated, in about '75 or '76 Q was dropped and the 15lb class became SS/R. I have a picture of one of my 16lb Impalas at Warner Robbins in about '76 with SS/T on the window. In '71 I ran a Belair two door in the 15lb class which was O/S at the time, it figured 15.60 which was way heavy for the class but it ran pretty good. I actually set the O/S record at Gainesville that year and tore down but later found out that Bruce Wilkerson set it the same day in Bowling Green with a '56 Wagon @ 225hp and he was quicker by about four hundreths or so.
