442

I have heard from a Chevy racer that his engine builder also builds some fast 340 motors and they will make 500 hp on his dyno. Thats seems to me a pretty close figure, IMO.

The thing that amazes me is that there are over 17 340/289 cars that have run 1.00 under (1.275 to 1.03) the first 6 month period according to Nitro Joe's Stats. He shows a total of 33 340/289 making Sea Level passes in the same period. They are from all over the country and I only counted Sea Level runs. To say they need some HP is up to NHRA. What do you think?? Its pretty obvious to me, but then I drive a Fairlane with a School Bus motor in it.

Todd

They are in "G" Bud!! But I don't think that Ponitac has much to worry about.

A good stock eliminator motor needs to make about 1.5 times it's rated hp on a conservative dyno. The 340 low compression Mopars do a little better than that. My motor does a little worse than that. All that being said there is more to making a stock eliminator car run that just the motor. These days you need a really trick trans, good converter and a whole lot more.

Greg

I agree with you........even if you do drive a Chevrolet. Does the fact that so many of these car running the 340/289 combo can run so far under surprise you? I hope that after Indy they (NHRA) will take a good look at the combo. I am not trying to sound mean, but what other combo in E and F have so many cars capable of running that far under. Are there many cars like yours that run that far under? I realize that its a "killer" combo, but I for one believe they need some HP. Indy proved that, even Ray Charles could see that!.

See you soon

RJ, I agree with you, even though you drive a Ford. Oh by the way I now own a new Ford Flex. First Ford I've ever owned and love it.

442 it looks to me like your motor needs to make about 540 hp to run 1.25 under. also everything else would need to be really good to do that.

Cool Re: Thanks Findell, Mosbek, and Wann for the Hp!

First the Duster only has to weigh 3200lbs to run FSA. If someone tells you there 340 motor makes 500hp, you should use there dyno so yours can make 800hp. The 340 is a good combo and it does make more than 1.5 per but it does not make 500 are 480 are 460hp. That is a big fish story. I had one of these and it was pretty fast and it did not make anywhere close to these numbers. I vote that RJ is Number 1 on the bs. He has always been there and will always keep that spot. He is the King!

The "small mopars" have one of the best transmissions ava. almost from the factory..so if you drive something else you need the best thing out there to be on the same level in that area...so in the past it was not all about the engine itself...but all-in-all its still about a engine/trans combo so if they need power is up to the "powers" so to say..i also think thats why you havent seen very many mopars running stick-shift from past to present...the engines maybe werent good enough when you took the automatic out of the combo!
