Cougar 427 + 390 hp hyd cam low riser heads Model was a GTE. Eliminator cam in 1969 as a Boss 302 or 428 CJ, very few GTE 427 built was later replaced by 428 CJ

1968 Cougar GTE 427/390hp, low riser heads, hyd cam, 735 Holley, only produced in 1968. They don't bring near as much as a 68 CJ Mustang . Nice cars put not much in the way of performance.

Fank Iaconio won a Cougar Eliminator for winning the Super Stock Nationals at York Dragway ....I don't reacll what year it was exactly. It was a race run over 2 or 3 days and the racer who got the most points for round wins took the title. The car was yellow with some black accents. I thought it was a 428 CJ engine. It sat out in front of Franks shop in Totowa for quite a while for sale......I always like the sequential tailights on those old Cougar's.....

I used to own a pair of 68 Cougar GT-E's with the 427 engine. I had an all original red one that I sold to a fellow in San Antonio, TX a few years ago.
The other one was the last 427 Ford product made. It was made in July, 68. The 427's were replaced by the 428CJ's in the GT-E starting in April, 68. However, my car was the only 427 made with ram air and it also had the two speed rear end. I think the rear end is what held the order up and let it go by with the 427 SO engine. I believe it was Alex (Moneymaker) that told me he knew a little history about my car and that it was a factory mule, maybe. Anyway, I sold it a few years ago for enough to buy a 69 drag pack GT-500 and thought I did well. Now, I really regret selling the Cougar although it is having a restoration done to it by someone that really appreciates what it is. |

Yes, it is '68 only, not 1967 as I posted originally. Also, it was a 390 factory rating and the 427 Cougar had the small Holley. I assume it was the small car and hydraulic cam that hampered performance, although 390 HP in a mid-weight pony car can't be much to sneeze at. Here's the carb specs per NHRA:
428 CJ Holley - 1686x1686/1375x1437 14 – (735 CFM) 427 Holley – 1563x1563/1250x1313 (600 CFM?) Interestingly, I see that NHRA lists this 427 as a Mustang option in 1968. While I do not believe that to be true, it is written. I would say the '68 427 Mustang / Cougar engine is due for some politickin' by some smart FOMOCO racers! How about something like the -75 HP drop the Pontiac 428 recently received? As I quickly review the specs, it looks like a 75 HP reduction is not out of line. Seriously.... Bill, how would you rate the performance of your Cougar GT-E against your GT-500? I would bet the GT500 is porkier and it shows. The GT-E's restored bring close to $100K and are a rare sight. Some more discussion on that 2-speed GT-E would be interesting. Something like that at BJ or other venue? The sky's the limit. I could see a car like that with a 427 and special rear being well north of $150K.

Jeff, II attended the 1971 NHRA Nationals at Indy, and took my camera (wonder of wonders.) The first car I took a picture of was a 1968 Mustang fastback Stocker that had a 427 (not a 428CJ) in it. Denny Reed was with me, and he raced a 428 '68 fastback at the time, and he wanted a copy of that picture because he said it was a rare option, and that was the only one he'd ever seen. Now, I can't find that picture. $#@^&*@^%$!!!!!! But, they DID exist.... a few, anyway. It was a hydraulic-lifter engine, according to Denny. Not a particularly good choice as a race car,, he said at the time.

Ford guys,
I say 305 HP factor. This 427 compares favorably (I think) to the 1965 Dodge 426 street wedge. The 427 has a approximate .050" larger cam and a few CFM over the mopar. So the question would be: is it worth 37 CI over a 390 / 315 with all of the inherent advantages a 390 has? Obviously I'm bored... ![]()
