Default MASGA Race #1 & # 2 Results

The Mid Atlantic Super Gas Association kicked off its 2009 campaign in style as 30 of the top northeast Super Gas drivers converged on Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa for race 1 and 2. As the gates opened on Saturday and the first 2 time trials were completed for the Super Gas competitors Lance Kreiger from Dover, Pa stole the #1 qualifying spot with an almost perfect 9.902. Following Kreiger was Don Knoblick (9.904) from Bath, Pa and Tom Goldman (9.907) from Allentown, Pa. As 1st round got underway a few competitors encountered problems on their final time shots and had to call it a weekend narrowing it down to 27 cars that would make the call for 1st round.

On the first side of the ladder was newcomer Delaney Richardson and his 92 Chevy Beretta. Delaney was only a newcomer to running 9.90 Super Gas and was using the MASGA races as practice to work on his car set-up for the NHRA D-1 races. Well in the 1st round Delaney or DV as many call him used a 9.915 to beat John Malcolm and his 38 Chevy Roadster, the 2nd round he took out Jim Fordyce's 94 Lumina with a 9.913. As the field got smaller and smaller Delaney just kept picking them off as his next competitor was Pete "Lucky" Luciano and his 68 Camaro. Luciano's got the advantage off the line (Luciano's .024 to DV's .037) and used it down track put the hard charging Beretta to the test but the 160+ mph charge was up for the task as DV put a 9.902 to Lucky's losing 9.895. The semi-finals DV would have to take on #2 qualifier Knoblick and his Glen's Car Care 72 Vega Wagon. Off the line again DV was a little late as they both headed down track towards the stripe. At the stripe Knoblick took way too much finish line and gave the win back to DV 9.816 to a winning 9.910.

The second half of the ladder saw #5 qualifier Hank Smith from Leesport, Pa and his 1995 Camaro make his march towards the finals. In the 1st round Smith had a tough task as he lined up against 2x MASGA Champ Iggie Boicesco and his 02 Corvette. Boicesco got a slight advantage off the line (.015 to .022) as the 2 cars headed down track but, as the scoreboards lit up Smith made up that slight advantage and would take the win 9.923 to a 9.967. Next round Smith would take out a red-lighting Bernie Staub and match up against Derek Clark in the 3rd. Smith would take out Clark with a .022 light and a 9.921 to Derek's .032 light and 9.932. In the semi-finals Smith would get a bye-run due to some unfortunate mechanical issues for Paul Schonberger and his 1980 Arrow. So in Race #1 it would be Richardson vs. Smith for the plaque.

As the 2 lined up for the final round Smith would be making his 2nd trip to a MASGA final as he had lost to Boicesco at last years Maple Grove MASGA race. Richardson was making his 1st S/G final. As the 2 cars lit the bulbs and the starter sent them on their way DV would take a nice size advantage over Smith (.028 to .042) and would carry that all the way to the winner circle with a 9.946 to the losing 9.953 of runner-up Hank Smith.

DV Richardson became the 1st 2009 MASGA winner and in the winner circle he wanted to give thanks to Larry from Pro Motion Race Engines and Joe from Precision Race Cars. Also with the car count that we had we were able to meet the garneted payout. Also thanks goes out to Joe Eickel who put up $ 50.00 to the competitor with the best package from 2nd round on and the winner was Don Knoblick with his 16 thousandth package in the 2nd round win over George Smith.

Unfortunately Race # 2 was rained out and will not be made up but, the next race for the MASGA crew is June 6th and 7th at Atco Raceway. This will be a great deal for Super Gas guys as their is no S/G at E-town this year and the Lucas Oil NHRA Series stops in Atco 2 weeks after MASGA!!!
