My experience with this has been with the circle track guys. Mostly ARCA,at the super speedways, if you took your plugs to be read by the Champion rep at the track, it was not unusual for him to recommend a hotter or colder plug for one or two cylinders. Most times it was a colder plug to avoid detonation.
I don't know how it can hurt for drag racing. Especially when it comes to detonation.
