By the old rules , if the "bump" was a 6.75 on Sat ......he DOES qualify with the 6.70 he laid down on Fri.
Never mind , I re-read the way you stated that.........."but shakes the tires" I think it cuts both ways.

All PRO categories fastest 12 cars in the first 2 qualifying sessions are " guaranteed to be in the show" -you will race you cannot be bumped out your qualifying position may change down but not out of the top 16!!! -- any runs made after that EVEN if they are faster than those first runs by number 1-12 bump into the show in the appropriate position 1-16 based on the fastest to the slowest until there is a full field --- but those latest qualifiers are entered according to position based on from the fastest to the slowest 16 cars and cannot move any cars out of the top 16 or to number 17- 18-19 whatever and thus out of qualifying--- so basically you qualify number 1-12 on Friday you are guaranteed to be in the show and no matter how any other NON qualified car runs even if its faster than your time in Saturday sessions 3 & 4 you will be in the show as long as you only move to positions 13-14-15-16 remain open when he makes his run in session 3 or 4

I don't think that this is correct.............

The top 12 qualifying spots are saved and the times carry over to the 3rd session..

If the class has 20 entries and they all are quicker than #12 he gets pushed back to #20....He can still qualify during the 4th session if he can bump #16 to #17.....

#12 in session #2 has no guarantee to make the field only that his pass will carry over to session #3...

What if session #4 was much quicker (better air, better track) would these cars who ran quicker than #12 not qualify????????????

How would 1st round pairings and lane choice go.....quicker or qualifying #....

What would the final qualifying sheet look like if #17 was quicker than #12????????????????/

#12 only races if he can stay in the top 16.........

Bob is correct. The top 12 times from Friday only carryover to Saturday. They are not guaranteed. It is possible to get bumped from the field in Q3 and Q4, no matter how quick you've run previously. Admittedly, the top 12 rule isn't as effective as it was in the past with greater car counts, but it is nice to have those four spots open on Saturday, especially when there is Friday night qualifying.

You guys can slice it / dice it and defend it.....all you want.
Its a dumb rule.
15. Alan Prusiensky Arcraceengines.com Dart 8.879 147.31
16. Dave River River Racing Cobalt 11.421 203.86
--------- Not Qualified ---------
17. Charlie Westcott Jr. Militia Racing Products Mustan NT
In the old days , even if you missed the setup on Sat. , your spot would carry over from Fri. unless you were bumped out of the last spot , last session , Sat.
What Sundays show SHOULD have looked like , was the 2nd session from Fri. With the exception of Alan P. everyone was at least a 6.80* or better.
No way Wescott gets denied to run the show on Sun.
Dumb rule.

This is exactly the reason for the current qualifying method. If someone missed the setup on the best session, they were screwed! None of the other sessions really mattered.

I wouldn't say I love the current rules, but there are arguments to be made in its favor.

Hi,

Not trying to take anything away from Wescott, but if he had run quicker than a 8.87 he would have made the show..........

I have all the respect in the world for the Wescott's, but they knew the rules for qualifying.....

They are not complaining about not qualifying and I wish them nothing but best in the future.....

Unfortunately the rules are the rules...

Anyone know if the Saturday sessions have ever been better than the Friday where the number one qualifier got bumped? Seems rare since the air and track should always be better on Friday night than Saturday afternoon. Maybe since qualifying is done over two days they should average two runs?

I think this conversation about qualifying is unique. Here we are on a racing web site which in my opinion a lot of "racers". We are wondering why our sport is diminishing and we can not understand the qualifying procedure. How are spectators going to? KISS.
