At first glance of the people standing I thought it was the Schumacher / Force entourage.

They shut the race down a couple of times and made people move off of the starting line. Took 15 minutes to get the crowd to move. Place was wall to wall people. Don't know what kind of security they had on hand. They were probably just trying to maintain some semblance of control. It does appear to be a different audience than shows up for NHRA events.

The crowds at the starting line have been like that for several years now at grudge racing events in the south. There's more people at the line than in the stands sometimes.

York.....Cecil County....and I'm sure others.

I was at York when the crowds were huge behind the starting line....late 1960's....

My question is how in the world is this starting line crowd tolerated when at just about any other race there is NO WAY that many people would be allowed to be that close to cars making 2000hp and more....

We pay a lot of money for safety items,....insurance surcharges.....chassis cert and jump thru hoops to meet the demands made of us by NHRA....all in the name of safety.....

It doesn't add up to an old guy like me......

Sure the excitement and enthusiasm is great but it's just thrill seekers to me.....

Cars doing giant wheelies way down track....big power....danger to the max........fast et's.....big mph...

I've seen it at Cecil when the small tire crowd was there......during a Lucas race and it was allowed.....

I just don't understand how it flys from an insurance and safety standpoint.....

Money talks......
Ok so we know their security at starting line wasn't the best. But it's a good problem trying to contain 40,000 people. And who cares wtf they are wearing. NHRA wishes they had that problem.Writing is on the wall old people.Yes I'm old.Lol.Heads up racing is the future.Ask any young people involved in drag racing. And isn't that the reason we build these S/SS cars.We can surely bracket race with a lot cheaper car.NHRA needs to delete some classes and get back to heads up no break out racing.Time to go to work!

NHRA tried to have some heads up events a couple years ago and it failed.

Last time I checked they are still running Pro mod.Keep the same rules those cars are running now, same format 1/8 mile etc.And put up a purse to entice those cars to come. Not what they (shaft) pay sportsmen racers now.I would bet a race like that with a good promoter like Bill Bader could get the same results.

LOL! I had SO many arguments over "the next coming thing" and that "imports are here to stay" "it's the NEW era of drag racing" On and on it went as F&F was in the theatres and everybody was putting macdonald's dinner trays under the back tires of their civic's then with the parkbrake on, "drifting" around parking lots. "oh yeah, you guys had drag racing but mark my words, drifting is the new drag racing"

Yeah ok punk....and now 10 years later.....the kid grew up and is driving a mustang and his friend is driving a challenger. New, mind you, and supercharged or turbo'd mind you...and now the call is "heads up is the only way to race, brackets are out" and in 10 years when they've burned through all their cash and have a mortgage/wife/kids....all of a sudden being able to race without having to spend every last cent will seem kinda cool too.

Simple rules.Excitement. Local people supporting their local racers. And a lack of too much oversight .That's what makes this racing popular. This is just like drag racing from the 60's and 70's. Now everything is over monitored. Would Wild Willie Borsh have made such a splash with both hands on the wheel? Why has street racing made a comeback? I'm sorry but S/G S/ST just too predictable.Throttle stops, electric shifters......Spectators know seat of the pants racing and they can tell one car from another. That's what makes it exciting. Stockers and SS doing wheelies gets people excited. It's all about the show.

Not nearly enough. My brother and I were at an expo this past weekend and we met with some track owners. Im 34 and my bro is 31. He mentioned to a specific track owner in NC that he has a 68 Camaro super stocker and is building a AA/SA 69 camaro. The first question from the track owners mouth..."wow, were those your dads cars?" HAHA, he said no, I make plenty of money to buy my own cars and build them. Had many similar conversations with other divisions about the future of stock/super stock.
