Default Stock/ss clarification

I'm trying to picture what was really Stock, Jr. Stock, Top Eliminator and SS. Starting with 1966, were most Stock cars modified enough to be loosely construed as SS. At what point did NHRA or IHRA or AHRA start restructuring the rules to give us S/ SS? Did the 50 car rule make any difference how the cars were classified in 1966? Not necessarily being specific to the 1966 D Dart, how did "50 cars made" rule affect the class? Presently the 1966 D Dart is only listed in the classification as SS only.
