Do you remember when we had the night time match races at Capital Raceway and jungal Jim and the Chitown were part of the show Jungle would do the fire burn out an the next pair Chitown would do a full track burnout. That was followed by the Super Stock match races.
Yes, and the same thing can happen, the love of money and contracts killed that too. I understand all to well that as long as two people have a car there will be a race. |

The issue as I see it is that there are just too many national events. Back in the old days there were 4-5 nationals a year, TV coverage was weeks delayed on Wide World of Sports, and the teams could make a living match racing.
Now, with 23+ national events, same day TV coverage, and instant internet results, match racing is dead. Travel expenses alone are out of sight for the teams, and people don't need to go to a local track to see their hero anymore. Racing is a victim of it's own success/excess. Force may only be able to bring 2 cars and 5 transporters now. |

Am I the only one here that actually watches racing for the racing itself?
My problem is that the author is challenging racers to trade performance for entertainment. I disagree with that completely. I never watched or got into racing for match racing, showy burnouts, or people wamping the throttles ten times over. It interested me because of all the technical aspects that combine to make the runs we see so great. I've never been excited for wrecks, explosions, or bumper wheelstands where the car is off the ground completely. I do however get excited seeing record breaking runs, close racing, and full tilt NA motors as seen in Pro Stock, Comp, and Super Stock. His article just doesn't hit home for me because as a racer, I would never give up a performance gain just to put on a show, I want to win, set records, collect tropies, and have fun while constantly working on my junk to go faster.

TOP/Stk and TOP/SS were a great breath of fresh air but never got the time in front of spectators, or the promotion from the towers to inform people watching. The Racers Love it and would do it again in a heart beat if allowed or invited. I have not seen the Norwalk show but it must have been great.
Big money cannot keep backing a full year of Millionaires and their excesses forever. It will come back to basic people running basic machines. The new SS cars will be too extreme also. |
