Default Re: GoPro Hero2 - What Do You Think?

I had a chance to talk with Garcia at the PRI show about the camera's and he told me they are going to add some wording, to the rule. I don't think they have an issue with the non metal mounting if inside the car. The concern was with one flying off after not being attached correctly. I have had the suction cup mount above 150mph, and many have had them much higher. I have also not latched the suction cup correctly and ran over the damn thing with the golf cart at five mph! He mentioned a tether "may" satisfy them, and that he wanted to add some "common sense" wording ( I had to chuckle at that, NHRA - Common sense aren't two words heard together very often) He said they had a lot of questions about the cameras at the show, and would try to make some clarification soon. He also gave me the impression that they don't want real time video transmissions. And that is the issue, not YouTube.

I have sold the GoPro Systems in the past and really liked the results. When NHRA banned all cameras period on Juniors year ago and killed my deal with GoPro on the Junior I was less than thrilled, but they act like they may revisit the issue with mounting. Another camera that was at the PRI show and would be worth a look is the Re-Play XD. They have a billet mount and from what I understand the owners are racers, and the quality seemed top notch both in equipment, and video.

Not really sure why NHRA objects to the in car video. It makes sense that using a live feed to take advantage of track position would not be allowed, but you could argue that video taken as a "tuning aid" or entertainment purposes should be legal. The Pro cars have had video (supplied by ESPN?) for a while, and that hasn't affected anything. The new rule also states that "Incident video may not be transmitted under any circumstances", probably to keep the results off YouTube, etc.

I have both camera`s gopro and the Re-play xd, I like the re-play better, smaller and to turn on and off, button on front on and off back and it vibrates to let you known it`s on or off. recharge of computer, no battery`s Tom

I wonder if the latest camera rule clarifications changes anything? Doesn't seem like it should as cameras were already permitted. The way the rule is written, the GoPro with the plastic mount is implied to be OK for cars 7.50 and slower...

Top of page 11 - http://www.nhra.com/UserFiles/file/2...01-19-2012.pdf

I'm putting the mount on my cage. We'll see what happens this spring...

Go to the latest NHRA rule amendments clear down at the bottom of the page and read the new amendment to the rule. The whole flap of this thing came from bone heads mounting them on the outside of their car and then when the camera came undone it went sliding down the track usually in the other lane. Why didn`t they just say you can`t mount the camera on the outside of the car and leave it at that. NHRA knee jerk.

And NHRA was right Vic, it would have been a shame to break a perfectly good camera!

Thumbs up Re: GoPro Hero2 - What Do You Think?

"One camera permitted unless NHRA permission is granted for additional cameras. May not be intentionally directed at the racer in the other lane without NHRA permission. Video may not be transmitted in any means or manner without NHRA permission, which permission, if granted, may be revoked at any time. Incident video may not be transmitted under any circumstances. No video monitors permitted in or on the car. Video may not be used in any way to determine track position in real time. Must be securely attached to the vehicle with appropriate fasteners. May not be attached with suction cups, wire ties, hose clamps etc. For any camera mounted external to the enclosed driver’s compartment of a full bodied door car, anywhere on any open-bodied car (including FC, TAFC, and Competition Eliminator and ET funny car type Altered bodies), and anywhere on any car 7.49 (*4.49) seconds or quicker all mounting brackets, associated fasteners, hardware, etc. from the camera to the vehicle attachment point must be metal, no plastic or nonmetallic components permitted. For all vehicles, attachment to the driver, the driver’s helmet, or the steering wheel / handlebars prohibited.”

I'm gunna say this means that cameras mounted inside (not outside) the car on cars running less than 7.49 (4.49) seconds or faster can used proper nonmetallic components (such as the GoPro roll bar mount). Jim
