York U.S. 30 -- yes it is not terribly busy, very little has changed around the immediate area of the airport, hangers are just to the right of the picture. There is a nice restaurant at the end of the runway at Rt. 30. Sadly it will never see racing again. Saw Dave Strickler and Bill Jenkins there in 1962, the Old Reliable '62 409 Bel Air was something else. Impressed me for sure!

Ed was correct , on his first try . took picture on way home from in-laws house . get some jersey barriers and a flag man and we could race . Looks a little down hill to me , remember going there in the 70's. Jim Fordyce

Drive out Rt 30 toward Gettysburg and the cemetery markers go as far as the eye can see......Quite a sight.....
I am very surpised that is a recent picture....figured it would look a lot busier. The tower is missing.....and the lanes to the left.... 1970 First year for the SummerNationals......I had to sleep in our ramp truck down by the hanger area on the entry road......We were bad (mostly me)at the motel and got a little crazy.....Management asked us to leave.......We did......Was very hot the next day and we sat and watched as we did not make the show......I always loved that place except for the long ride to get there.......Along with the racing the sideshow was great........Miss Hurst.....Miss Anton......Wow....

I only raced there twice 1978-9 at the NED Bracket Finals. Some of the cars that stand out in my mind are the Whoopie car ('49 anglia),Steel City car,Lou Drayers chevette,a
black and green gremlin (BBC powered),Tom Vicari's later Tom Dauber's gremlin (BBC powered) and an AMC powered altered from Canada.I had my 1973 (304 AMC powered) gremlin.Ran for Hampton (L.I.) Raceway.Fun times.Remember stopping a few times for planes to land/take off. In 1980 some brain sturgeon, due to the race no longer at US 30,thought of the idea to run the 1st rd of the 1980 Bracket Finals at Lebanon Valley and then finish the race at Maple Grove.I wasn't really privy to anything going on then and thought someone had lost their minds. That was the only year I didn't run at the Finals up until I quit bracket racing in 1991.

Geez Ed, I was there for bracket finals in '77 and '78 representing New England. How did I miss you? I remember them stopping races to land planes. Good times.

It was 77 I think and I finished high enough to go to the York Finals for Hampton Raceway but had no where near the money or time to go so they sent an alternate I think. In 78 I took a little break from my normal 2-3 days a week bracket racing because my band was playing way too much and I had a few too many girlfriends, I needed a break. I raced at Hampton only once a month or so that summer. When it came near the bracket finals at York, my buddy was just a few points shy and he wanted to go badly. He asked me to drive his car and sign his name as there was a new tech man there who wouldn't recognize me, it was 78 at Hampton so what the heck, I mean , Willey Hassock would leave his beer right in the staging lanes so he could have a swig as soon as he came back for the next round. My buddy feared a guy who would pull right behind him and beat him every time (A regular Div 1 Stock racer now). Well I waited for the guy to pull up and pulled right behind him, he never looked to see who I was as the track still had only 1 handicapped lane so there was no need for a coin flip on lane choice. After I beat him I went on to win the race that day, It felt like winning as well as revenge for my buddy and we shared a 100 dollar prize, which was still good money back in 78. My buddy went on to the bracket finals and I came back the next year full force. I never told the story to the 1st round guy as it was still a fair race for those times but I will someday.

The only time I was there was for the "Woodstock" of drag racing in 1965 for the SS/DI funny car race (although they weren't called that yet) but every altered wheelbase car in the nation was there.
We climbed over the fence and stood beside the srtip and watched the cars go by at 140mph, they were close enough that you could reach out and touch them, guys were standing so close to the cars at the starting line that they were making bets on the starting RPM's of each car... they were so close they could read the tach's. It was magical! JimR
