the IHRA Spring Nationals from BRISTOL in 1983. The sportsman eliminations are from the 27 minute time mark to near the 35 minute mark. THIS IS GREAT VIDEO. I wish today's drag racing coverage for sportsman was as good as this video. You will see a lot of familiar names.

I was there! Watching that was like meeting an old friend you have not seen in years. My Brother (David)started started racing a 1958 Chevy wagon in SS/3JA 2bbl class in 1981, and before the wife and kids I pretty much went to every race that he did. That 50 Olds rocket 88 was a favorite of mine, I think it fit in Z/SA I always enjoyed the wagons, oddball combos, and the slow "come catch me" cars. It sure was neat watching a "stick" in the finals of H/R, and it was a pleasure to NOT see a heads up car with electronics "coast" for 2 seconds. I used to watch the heads up classes back then, but not now. I had forgot about Johnny Mcquirt (sp?) having the nova in SS, I did remember his SS/FA corvette. After watching Ricky Smith give the camera man a ride, I remembered Mike Bowles giving (I think) Vern Gosden the country music singer a ride in the Good Ol Charlie Brown Wagon at Farmington Dragway in North Carolina. Thanks for making the evening a good one! Don Jackson

That natural high nova car is still around with the same paint(I Think).
How about Terry Taylor in the finals of SS as a teenager. Truman Fields car. The front engine dragster in Q/R (would be the same as T/S-T/D) now. Tommy Mauney in Modified. I was probably there too, but by the finals we were already on the way home.LOL Chip Johnson p.s. LONG TREE |

Very sweet! Loved the sportsman action.
Anybody else notice that Mark Oswald won $20,000 for winning Funny Car??? In 1983...

Looked it up on the "Cost of living Online Calculator:
http://www.aier.org/research/col.php[/ $20,000 in 1983, would be $41,305.22 in 2007.
