Default Why No S/ST 10.90 @ Indy

Hello All.
I was just wondering why NHRA shuns us S/ST racers at Indy.

Indy is the Holy Grail of NHRA Drag racing.
Every class is run at Indy but 3.

Why not S/ST, TD & T/S ?

Maybe alternate years or something.

Some classes run at some races, other classes at other races. Depends on time, space, etc. Here's the schedule: http://www.nhra.com/2013sportsman_class_schedule.aspx

We are just fillers when they need to get the car count up.

if memory serves me right, the last two winners of SG, including this year's Phil Smida, were driving racecars usually driven in S/ST... maybe everyone will start selling their 175 mph Corvettes and buying Cavaliers and Mustangs!

That would be cool. I know my car just won't hit a .400 tree with out a lot of work in the 4 link area. And it will only run like 152 MPH.

But who knows over the winter we may make some changes. to see if we can turn a .400 tree red

S/ST is not sponsored as a national championship class by Lucas Oil. It would cost another $50K or more to do so, and I'm sure NHRA would listen if a sponsor stepped up, but until then it is not a "national Lucas Oil" class.

In my view, the "Indy" of S/ST is the Jeg's Allstars at Chicago each year; it is always run there both for the Allstars and the national event, plus at one national event in each other division throughout the year. Usually in Division 2 it's Atlanta, sometimes Charlotte.

I turned the same questioned over to my SRAC member. Granted it's a wish list. However I would not contend that it be competed as a LODRS world championship class. Simply, as mentioned before, a class that's added to the Indy schedule. This way there's no pressure to gain additional sponsor dollars. I would put a 30 - 40 cap on the field, the same quota as most S/ST Nats, and let the grade point system take care of who gets to race there. This would reward the "full time" S/ST racers with a better shot at making the field. It also motivates racers to participate in the divisional series to get the necessary grade points. Which I believe is the way the grade point system was designed to work.
I also had on my wish list to increase the number of S/ST Nats in each division to two. The fields are only 75%...why not? ...Maybe they actually like the sportsman car count being lower. Who knows.
