Default "Racing is killing Drag Racing"

Go to Competition Plus and read the arrival by Job Asher. I know some of you are not fans of his but this will hit home. NHRA Pro Show is coming to an end. All of the big money is leaving. Castrol just announced it is leaving John Force Pro Drag Racing next year. If Super Stock can put away the stripe racing and get to attracting spectators instead of turning them off it could be "the way it
was" with a couple of funny cars or dragsters being only for show. Get ready change is coming.

Michael, I spoke with someone who went to the Norwalk event to watch, and told me you couldn't believe all of the spectators. I hope the leadership of n.h.r.a. can take a hint. John Kissel

Jon Asher is one of the great automobile writers and is quite right when it comes to the pro-racing. Limit Top Fuel 500inch single mag and you will not need fuel pumps that could empty an ocean in 3.5 second. Make sure that funny car bodies meet close to the manufacturers specs, same for Pro-Stock(nobody likes a blimp Camaro and let them pull the wheels. Claude Ruel

Hey chris3racing,

Let's see, a year ago you were telling us that we were all doomed and Pinks All Out was the wave of the future so excuse me if I have trouble taking your most recent insight on the direction that drag racing is going. Sure, drag racing isn't what it was in the 60's but I'm not going to loose sleep over it. I'm too busy racing to spend my time dwelling on the negatives, maybe you should do the same.

Just for starters .......Real Drag Racing is a quarter mile ...1320 feet... ( NFL Football is 100 yards. Arena Football is less than 100 yards ) ....need I say more. JB

Am I the only one here that actually watches racing for the racing itself?

My problem is that the author is challenging racers to trade performance for entertainment. I disagree with that completely. I never watched or got into racing for match racing, showy burnouts, or people wamping the throttles ten times over. It interested me because of all the technical aspects that combine to make the runs we see so great. I've never been excited for wrecks, explosions, or bumper wheelstands where the car is off the ground completely. I do however get excited seeing record breaking runs, close racing, and full tilt NA motors as seen in Pro Stock, Comp, and Super Stock. His article just doesn't hit home for me because as a racer, I would never give up a performance gain just to put on a show, I want to win, set records, collect tropies, and have fun while constantly working on my junk to go faster.

TOP/Stk and TOP/SS were a great breath of fresh air but never got the time in front of spectators, or the promotion from the towers to inform people watching. The Racers Love it and would do it again in a heart beat if allowed or invited. I have not seen the Norwalk show but it must have been great.
Big money cannot keep backing a full year of Millionaires and their excesses forever. It will come back to basic people running basic machines. The new SS cars will be too extreme also.
