Default Sponsor Names

Was told that Ray Thurston had to cover up the Vegas Fuel energy drink decals on his Top Sportsman if he wanted to race @ Norwalk. This came after he pasted tech. Seems to me that Full Throttle has little or nothing to do with sportsman racers. Sportsman have Lucas Oil to thank for their involvement with NHRA but they still allow Valvoline,Red Line,Pennzoil, ect to be displayed on cars. Just wondering where this might be going. Any thoughts?

Tim,

When Coke and Co came in, there was a clause in the contract that no other Soda, Energy Drink, or whatever were allowed to be displayed.

That was supposed to have only been a year or so and I recall racers losing big and little sponsorships. Pepsi was one I recall who had planned to have a "superteam" back then. Apparently that clause has been ammended.

This is covered in detail in the yearly rulebook. Not that it would matter, we don't get rulebooks anymore. There must be more to the story though. There have been several energy drink companies that have provided sponsorship to some level on several Pro and Sportsman teams. Anyone in the know about Thurston's situation?

I`m sure the Coca Cola company loves it when the "NHRA Enhanced Tour" goes to tracks that have Pepsi or other soft drinks on the top of the scoreboards!

The rule is pretty cut and dry on page 61.

Unless its a primary full year sponser that is part of the grandfather clause you can't have anyone else's name on anything. Should have made been discussed with the sponsor when establishing a contract.

I'll never have a car with a sponsors name on it but would do the smae if I did. It's a slap in the face to your sponsor to cover up what he's paid to have displayed. Minimum would be a phone call to get their permission.

I know a local guy who still takes his small sponsorship even though he hasn't raced in 2 years. The Sponsor is a large company that really supports Drag Racing so they don't keep close tabs on who they are helping and isn't aware of the situation. I hope Karma pays this guy a visit.
