Default Trailer towing ?

If I'm towing a car on an open trailer and the trailer has passenger car tires on it,if I'm stopped by law enforcement (police, state police,DOT) am I in compliance with the law?

Depends upon the law in that jurisdiction.

I wouldn't do it anyway, an open trailer should have at least load range C truck tires, after all the trailer and car together weigh more than the car itself, so you need better tires than you would on the car, for any number of reasons.

if you are going to PA, from what I hear, they also look at the date on your tires. Can't be over 2 years old.

Reason I asked was some brain sturgeon on another site posted that he's used pass. car tires on his trailers for 25 years, with no problems. He has some pics of a few very nice AMC cars.I hope he tows chevies around instead of the AMCs.:>):>)

Chris,if that's the case just about every race car and other trailer would be in impound now.

Ed,

I think if you don't exceed the rated weight carrying capacity of the tires there shouldn’t be a problem.....

I guess that he would have to have your trailer taken to a weigh station to confirm the weight...

Seems like a lot of work to issue a ticket...

I towed an open trailer for years with passenger car tires with no problems....

Just air them up to the max rated pressure..

Bob
