Default to build a stocker or not ...

To begin with, about 5 years ago I had a F/PS '95 Impala SS that I sold to Corbitt Marshburn. He and his son went on to the IHRA record with the car. That was the only car that I've ever built and owned that I regretted selling.

Fast forward to today ... I purchased another one earlier this year that runs high 11s NA and high 10s with a small shot of nitrous. The car is completely street legal and built with very high quality parts. This winter I want to pull the motor to freshen it and am kicking around putting legal iron heads on it. To run F/PS it would take heads, cam, and small items like a stock TB, MAF, injectors, etc. I already have a TH400 with a 2.75 low gear, and nice suspension pieces, etc. My goal is to be able to continue to be street legal, run some bracket events, and an occassional points meet. Dallas and Pine Valley are both close events for me so that's 3 events per year. Class racing has always interested me and I've followed it for over 20 years. I thought this would be a very versatile car, would easily run at least 0.5 under the intex, if not more based on experience, and since there are no DP or CJ in that class I'd be out of the current ''muck'' ... LOL. What other angles do I need to look at this from ...

Thanks. Scott

Scott:
I recently went thru this debate about turning my 95 Mustang GT into a P/S but after 2 months at looking at the rulebook, I ended up buying a 89 Mustang Coupe 5.0 to run in NHRA/IHRA Stock.

As I interrupt the IHRA rulebook:
* That TH 400 is not legal for P/S --Must be the trans that came from the factory with only a shift kit and convertor change.

Check out IHRA's rulebook (from the link below) for all the specs for P/S. It's pretty restricted, but I believe your SS would probably run o.k.

Keep us posted

Good point on the TH400 Alan. Thanks for the reminder ... I knew that once upon a time. My old car had the 4L60E in it but this one has a nice Turbo Action with a good TC. That's funny that I can't run a TH400 but 60's stockers can run Metric transmissions. LOL Given that, since I have good parts and make nice HP numbers, I'll most likely do a forged 396'' motor and add more nitrous and shoot for the 9s with my 4100lb. tank.
