I left a message with NHRA tech but their at the races right now. I've been told the rule regarding wheel tubs (must be steel, same gauge as factory) has been modified to allow the use of aluminum tubs. But I can't find reference to that in the rule book. Is aluminum allowed (or carbon fiber), and if so, where is it noted?
Another question. Is a full length one piece tub allowed in a car that came equipped with a trunk (unlike the 'vettes)? I've heard of at least one SS 1st gen Camaro with this feature. I like the idea of a carbon fiber tub as there would be no rock dents like aluminum and a full one-piece tub offers more room on the underside to work around. I can't imagine carbon fiber is any lighter than aluminum.

Must be steel
aluminum ok for back piece and package tray ie firewall to trunk area. For SS must have original floor between frame rails. For GT original floor not required between frame rails. Material must be same thickness as original |

Jeff, I've seen several cars done this way in SS. ...It really makes sense in a car like the AMX because of the short wheelbase and no room behind the seat area..........The tubs were made big enough to cover the 4 -link . .....Tom

Wade, I have been on your site and following your Corvette build, and you exhibit great workmanship. Those wheel tubs are very nicely done. When we put tubs in a '57 Corvette many years ago we used sectioned fuel drums as molds......and the end result looked it too! Not one of our prouder achievements...... |

I know this is an old post, but do the steel wheel tubs have to be welded in or can they be riveted?
